Utiel-Requena is a wine region within the Valencia province in Spain. Wines have been produced here continuously since the 7th century BC, starting with the Iberians, with continuing evolution through the Romans. Wine production managed to survive through two conditions which otherwise halted production in most of Europe: It was tolerated throughout the Moorish occupation, despite Muslim law forbidding alcohol consumption and production. And it survived Phylloxera in the late 1800s because most of the wines are produced from the Bobal grape, which is largely resistant to the pesky mites. This was a particular boom to the area during this crisis. Wines were exported through the port of Valencia to the rest of Europe, which was otherwise lacking in a source for local wine for many years until the American-hybrid grafting cure was discovered. A further boost came in the way of railroad construction connecting Utiel with the rest of Valencia.

  • Mustiguillo Mestizaje 2005

    Snoothrank:

lovely dark purple intense yet delightfully balanced considering how many grapes are in this blend, the native spanish grape bobal adds an earthyness to the fruit of the others such as the merlot and garancha. High tannins but not so much as to make it intolerable! I wonder if it would keep for a few years yet...I really liked itand the boyfrien... Read More

  • Sybarus Fermentado En Barrica Crianza Bobal 2005

    Snoothrank:

Nice dark maroonish red color to this wine, with a core that is quite dark. Bit funky on the nose with a rich anise, and dark cherry paste like quality. Roast meats almost with dark nature to the nose, give it an hour to open. In the mouth this wine nice and rich, very rich with fine fine tannins that coat every inch. Very intense flavor, with a... • Bodegas Torroja Sybarus Único Tardana 2007

    Snoothrank:

Pale greenish-yellow in color with a shimmering quality of white gold. Light ripe white peach, cream and vanilla on the nose with a light touch of honey. Really pleasant and approachable aroma that is both reserved and austere. Round, lush mouthfeel with medium acidity and a rich citrus and mineral finish. Interesting wine, especially as it is m... • Bodegas Torroja Sybarus Único Tardana 2007

    Snoothrank:

Faint gold color to this wine, with a nose that seems closed, and hidden. Some apricot, or peach flavors though very muted with touches of cream. In the mouth this has a very fresh acidity, bright and alive with an austere fruit. This is my first Tardana, and I have to say I'm not sure what to make of it. Full in the mouth it shows a lot of body... Read More
