Utiel-Requena is a wine region within the Valencia province in Spain. Wines have been produced here continuously since the 7th century BC, starting with the Iberians, with continuing evolution through the Romans. Wine production managed to survive through two conditions which otherwise halted production in most of Europe: It was tolerated throughout the Moorish occupation, despite Muslim law forbidding alcohol consumption and production. And it survived Phylloxera in the late 1800s because most of the wines are produced from the Bobal grape, which is largely resistant to the pesky mites. This was a particular boom to the area during this crisis. Wines were exported through the port of Valencia to the rest of Europe, which was otherwise lacking in a source for local wine for many years until the American-hybrid grafting cure was discovered. A further boost came in the way of railroad construction connecting Utiel with the rest of Valencia.

  • Have a great time, I like the idea of you getting to sample both Utiel-Requena and Ribera if that's at all a possibility. Think you made a good call in going to Spain based on your palate and interests. Read More

  • A quick update: after contacting several tour companies, I now have a variety of options ranging from 100 to 1000 euros. I already have confirmed train tickets from Madrid to Utiel-Requena early in the morning and return tickets for the evening. So this looks very doable. I also have options for Ribera Del Duero, with the benefit of getting pick... Read More

  • So some of those places are near Madrid but it's pretty exhausting getting ... the first day tasting. Also, Utiel Requena is really off the beaten track as it were - it's a pretty new region for serious wines and there aren't a lot of great places. Most are pretty bad actually. Priorat isn't a tourist place so much either, and frankly, neither... Read More

  • DMCKER- thanks for the info. You are probably right about Rioja. It looks like I'll use Madrid as a base- just because there are flight options there that work (and are cheap to boot). It seems there are fewer & more expensive flights directly to Valencia. But the hotel is cheap in Madrid, and the train ride to Requena-Utiel looks to be 1.5 hour... Read More

  • So Greg, I'm pretty ignorant about Bobal, Utiel Requena and Valencia's immediate wine regions. Minimal web research brings up quick options like Murviedro (just using them to stimulate discussion; not in any position to recommend for or against them), but I can't ever remember even having any of their wines, nor have I tried to chase down any re... • ESOL,I very much like the Spain, Utiel-Requena idea. Have had some very nice wines from there myself, and while I love the Dijon-Burgundy idea for myself, it does really help to know some people in that area, and the Spain idea figures to be at least 1/3 the price, maybe far less for what's considered to be "good wines" for the region/s.Have fun... • As for the variety that currently has my interest most... I'd have to say its Bobal. I just looked that up, and it seems to be from the Spanish Utiel-Requena DO in the province of Valencia. I'm not sure about airports or public-friendly wineries there, but its something to investigate. Seems they also produce Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cab Sauv and ... Read More

  • Hoya de Cardenas Reserva Tempranillo 2010

    Snoothrank:

This superb value from an ancient wine region just west of Valencia has a wonderful nose of acidic fruit such as cranberry, serviceberry or some types of wild blueberry. The palate receives a pretty good dose of soft blueberry with pucker-inducing acidity and soft tannin; entry and finish is smooth and pleasant. Recommended. 88 points. Read More
