Rioja Wine

The Rioja region of Spain produces one of the world’s finest, and most long lived wines: Rioja. Both wines are blend relying heavily on one grape, in this case Tempranillo. Like Chianti’s Sangiovese, Tempranillo usually produces a relatively high acid wine of medium to medium-full body. Tempranillo tends to produce wines with a dusty, leathery edge to their raspberry and blackberry fruit tones. With additions of Graciano, Mazuela and Grancha the wines of Rioja can take on additional layers of flavor and aroma but the tradition of extended oak aging for Rioja's great wines contributes an even more obvious imprint. While the Spaniards have traditionally been a fan of the strong vanilla and coconut component that American oak Read more »

  • Casado Morales Gran Reserva 2006

    Snoothrank:

Very nice wine and one very good QPR. Lite hit of cherry on introduction. Then its all wine, all the time. Tannin and acid are apparent, but relatively sedate. I doubt there will be much left of this bottle in a few hours. Read More

  • Baron de Ley Reserva Rioja 2011

    Snoothrank:

Very bright fruity nose. On the tongue there certainly is bright fruit but, wow, is it ever tart. There is some herbaciousness, but again, the, pretty much in your face, characteristic seems to be lemon pith. If this was a light-bodied white wine I would say refreshing. In a full-bodied red, though, I am just perplexed. Read More
