Rioja Wine

The Rioja region of Spain produces one of the world’s finest, and most long lived wines: Rioja. Rioja's renaissance, in the latter half of the 19th century, was a direct result of the phyloxera bug that decimated vineyards around the globe. While English merchants came to Rioja to replace their French imports, the wines here actually have much more in common with Chianti. Both wines are blend relying heavily on one grape, in this case Tempranillo. Like Chianti’s Sangiovese, Tempranillo usually produces a relatively high acid wine of medium to medium-full body. Tempranillo tends to produce wines with a dusty, leathery edge to their raspberry and blackberry fruit tones. With additions of Graciano, Mazuela and Grancha the wines of Rioja can take on additional layers of flavor and aroma but the tradition of extended oak aging for Rioja's great wines contributes an even more obvious imprint. • Lopez de Heredia Bosconia Rioja 2000

This opens with just a touch of an acetic tone then turns layered with an earthy, leathery core of jellied raspberry fruit with a touch of vanilla and high tones of pepper, cedar, and a brisk saline note. With airing this gains nuanced floral and star anise tones as well as a smoky top note. In the mouth this is really bright with zesty, mouth c... Read More

  • Lopez de Heredia Bosconia Rioja 2000

Light on the nose, but with an interesting chemical quality thats barely present. Aged and mellowing, retaining high acidity. Its very mineral - like sucking on a small pebble (the acidity makes the mouth water which helps with this analogy). Fairly meaty and earthy. Read More

  • Campo Viejo Tempranillo Blend Rioja Crianza 2004

Ruby red wine with strong tannins and a long finish. A little tart, so it makes me wonder if it could improve with a few more years in the cellar. I have had better 5 dollar wines, but I think this one does have potential. Read More
