The Navarra region lies between La Rioja and the French border, with the Pyrenees to the north, and the Ebro river running up from the south.

It gained notoriety for its juicy, Garnacha-based rosados. However, some good examples of  Tempranillo wines, sometimes blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha, are making an international  splash. The small production of whites are typically produced from Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Chardonnay.

Subregions:

*Baja Montana: This northern region on the hills of the Pyrenees specializes in Garnacha rosado production, with some Tempranillo red wines and blends also produced.

*Ribera Alta: Farther down into the flatter land, the area is hotter, with a wider range of soils. This makes it ideal for growing Tempranillo. Much of the style is similar to classic Rioja, with oak aging and blends using small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo. Chardonnay and Moscatel are also cultivated for whites.  Read more »

  • Bodegas Nekeas Vega Sindoa Grenache El Chaparral Old Vine 2011

    Snoothrank:

A Lot 18 selection. A lovely ruby color and it opens up with Raspberry/Grape Jam scents then a bit of vanilla, green, earth. 14% alcohol, Medium Dry and a bit Tart but opens up and softens after about 15 minutes. Very nice bottle, incredible for the price point. Read More

  • Artazuri Garnacha Rosado 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fruity, floral and just slightly meaty on the nose with baked strawberry fruit and just a hint of a green, leafy edge. Tart red fruits emerge early on the palate followed by slightly sweet, and tart, and slightly simple red fruits, raspberry and currant toned with a touch of leafy complexity and earthy spice adding complexity right through the r... • Castillo Monjardin Chardonnay El Cerezo Unoaked 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fresh and polleny on the nose with a hint of jellied orange candy laid under the zesty ginseng edged apple and nectarine fruit here. Bright, fresh and sapid in the mouth with early flavors of lime and lemon frenching the palate before they gain apricot and green apple nuance on the backend. theres a hint of spice here, something slightly bitter ... • Tablao Navarra 2012

    Snoothrank:

A nice deep red color. Jammy nose-almost candy like bordering on dish soap...concerning. However, red fruit bursts on your palate. No lingering finish. Medium mouthfeel. All fruit. Amazing price. Read More

  • I'm always good for some Julian Chivite rose from Navarra, or a d'Acqueria Tavel.  Even those inexpensive Ferme Juliens (Vielle Ferme with a proprietary label) from TJs work for me.  When it comes to rose, I just want it chilled, clean, not sweet, and preferably made with grenache, cinsault, or a mix, although Baker Lane and Horse and Plow made ... • Artazuri Garnacha Navarra Rosado 2012

    Snoothrank:

A huge note of violets greet the nose along with a whiff of road tar and hints of vanilla and black pepper all laid over a base of fairly plummy and strawberry toned fruit. Fruity and almost a bit sweet on entry, this quickly turns firm in the mouth and the fairly obvious tannins kick in. Its a medium bodied example of garnacha, with good acids ... Read More
