This is a small region within the Murcia province surrounded by Jumilla, Almansa and Alicante (of the Comunidad de Valenciana region). The wines are labeled and districted according to the quality of the grapes: Grapes from Yecla Campo Arriba are considered the best quality since the vines tend to be older. Yecla Campo Abajo, is considered inferior, but is nonetheless an enjoyable wine to sip on.

The climate is Mediterranean shifting inland to continental, mostly very hot and dry. Monastrell (Mourvedre) is best suited for plantings under these conditions, with Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah used in blends. Young wines are often made in the carbonic maceration style, like Beaujolais Nouveau. But fine barrel-aged wines, especially from the Arriba level grapes, can be found.

White wines are made from Airen and Macabeo (Viura).

  • Bodegas Castaño White Blend Yecla Macabeo/Chardonnay 2008

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose with notes of licorice, green anise seed, green peppercorn, mint, and lightly roasted blackcurrant and black berry fruit. This enters the mouth with notes of sandalwood and tobacco, wrapped in roasted dark cherry and blackberry fruit. The mid-palate is round and supple, though it is underpinned by significant tannins. While fai... Read More

  • Castano Hecula Monastrell Spain Yecla Dry 2008

    Snoothrank:

Full bodied earthy aroma with almonds, pepper, black fruit, and oak. Very soft approach and easy going on the palate, with vanilla and apple fruit on the finish, which has a slightly chalky texture. Read More

  • Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Yecla 2010

    Snoothrank:

Earthy aroma with blackberries and oak - good strawberry fruit in the body comes through after it sits for awhile. A bit harsh when you first open it - volatile acidity and young tannins. Herb and tomato notes as well; it's kind of like drinking an artisinal pizza. Read More

  • Bodegas Castaño Mourvedre Blend Yecla Solanera Viñas Viejas 2009

    Snoothrank:

It was very good and full bodied but the 2005 vintage I got had a lot of sediment. So it coated my mouth a lot. Tasted at Total Wine Tasting and purchased for at home. I don't know if I would get it again, but I like the blend. It's very complex. Read More

  • Bodegas Castaño White Blend Yecla Macabeo/Chardonnay 2008

    Snoothrank:

On the scrounge during a hectically short lunch break, I came upon a perennial favorite at an unusual bargain-basement price. This above average Monastrell has an inviting deep, black robe redolent of blueberry, is well balanced on entry with some character poking through and yes - even structure for a couple more years in the cellar! Viva Espa... Read More
