This is a small region within the Murcia province surrounded by Jumilla, Almansa and Alicante (of the Comunidad de Valenciana region). The wines are labeled and districted according to the quality of the grapes: Grapes from Yecla Campo Arriba are considered the best quality since the vines tend to be older. Yecla Campo Abajo, is considered inferior, but is nonetheless an enjoyable wine to sip on.
The climate is Mediterranean shifting inland to continental, mostly very hot and dry. Monastrell (Mourvedre) is best suited for plantings under these conditions, with Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah used in blends. Young wines are often made in the carbonic maceration style, like Beaujolais Nouveau. But fine barrel-aged wines, especially from the Arriba level grapes, can be found.
White wines are made from Airen and Macabeo (Viura).

drank August 2007 / will need more time / does have its merits in color, fruit content, and complexity, but is rather astringent at this time / will give the other 5 bottles a few years. Read More

  • Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Yecla 2001

A bit soft with a sour barnyard nose to it. This did blow off with a bit of time open and gave way to some nice cherry, and raspberry fruit. Light spice on the palate made this a fun drink, though I will be drinking up! This wine is at or past peak. 3/5 [NR] Read More

  • Coop. del Vino de Yecla "La Purísima" Yecla Tinto Reserva Iglesia Vieja 2000

Reddish purple with a medium intensity. The nose shows light black pepper, cinnamon, blackberry, chocolate, cherry oak and with some time fresh raspberry. Med to heavy mouthfeel with firm tannins and medium acid. Solid core of fruit to this wine, with cherry, black berry, some brown spices, and raspberry. Really a nice wine in it's prime with go... • Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Yecla Hécula 2002

Deep purple with thick legs. Blackberry, black cherry and black pepper all show on the nose which happens to be quite big. Sneaking in on the backend of the nose is a light minerality. Rich in the mouth with strong tannins and high acid. Almost too much. The flavors of the nose follow through though I think this wine could still use to calm down... Read More

  • Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Yecla Hécula 2002

Did not rate. Opened for dinner and it was shut down. Almost nothing but strong tannins. Double decanted and let sit. I ended up drinking it two days later when the fruit decided to show up. Nice wine but I think it needs some time to calm down. [NR] Read More
