Murcia lies in the Southeast of Spain in the Levante province, named after the region’s capital on the Sigura river. French winemakers settled in the area in the second half of the 19th century after Phylloxera killed their crops at home. They came to realize the hot and dry Mediterranean climate with coastal winds resembled the Mourvèdre-growing areas of France, et voilà, the Spanish Monastrell grape was planted. The resulting wine is dark purple, and when produced with finesse, can be quite well structured and fruity, with balanced earth and minerality.

The region is home to Yecla and Bullas, but Jumilla is where the most quality expressions of the wine are produced. Other grapes grown and often blended with Monastrell are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The few white wines are made from Macabeo, Airen and Merseguera. Rosado and dessert styles are also produced.

  • Heretat de Cesilia Red Blend Vino de Mesa Lizana 2004

    Snoothrank:

Nice deep red color. The nose is restrained at first only showing a smoky fruit profile with some herbal qualities like mint and rosemary. In the background there is a whole mess of red fruits trying to show through with a cashew and hazelnut nuttiness. This wine really draws you in. Lush in the mouth with a high acidity and firm tannins that ar... Read More

  • Bodega Castano Rosé Toledo Yecla 2001

    Snoothrank:

A bit soft with a sour barnyard nose to it. This did blow off with a bit of time open and gave way to some nice cherry, and raspberry fruit. Light spice on the palate made this a fun drink, though I will be drinking up! This wine is at or past peak. 3/5 [NR] Read More

  • Bodega Balcona Partal Bullas Crianza 2001

    Snoothrank:

60% Monastrell, followed by Tempranillo, Cabernet Suavignon, Syrah, and Merlot Deeper color than the 2002 with a darkness that is hard to see into. The nose two seems more complex(maybe time in bottle) showing a herbal quality of mint, green pepper and layered black fruit background. The palate still has firm tannins and acids dominating but the... Read More

  • Bodega Balcona Partal Bullas Crianza 2002

    Snoothrank:

60% Monastrell the rest, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot The nose right away show oak, and smokey fruit both dried and fresh. The color is intense and deep ruby. In the mouth it has big tannins with a firm oak backbone. While flavors of cherry and black fruits mingle. Still a bit tight but a really fun wine, and one that I wou... Read More

  • Bodega Balcona Partal Bullas Selección 37 Barricas 2003

    Snoothrank:

Monastrell, Trempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon Deep ruby red, very rich in color. The nose shows alcohol on this monster (14.5%) with some fruit, though this begins to blow off with some air. In the mouth this is a big wine with firm tannins and a strong acidity. With time flavors of blackberry, raspberry, and pepper come forward. I would really l... Read More

  • Coop. del Vino de Yecla "La Purísima" Yecla Tinto Reserva Iglesia Vieja 2000

    Snoothrank:

Reddish purple with a medium intensity. The nose shows light black pepper, cinnamon, blackberry, chocolate, cherry oak and with some time fresh raspberry. Med to heavy mouthfeel with firm tannins and medium acid. Solid core of fruit to this wine, with cherry, black berry, some brown spices, and raspberry. Really a nice wine in it's prime with go... • Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Yecla Dulce 2002

    Snoothrank:

Deep purple with thick legs. Blackberry, black cherry and black pepper all show on the nose which happens to be quite big. Sneaking in on the backend of the nose is a light minerality. Rich in the mouth with strong tannins and high acid. Almost too much. The flavors of the nose follow through though I think this wine could still use to calm down... Read More

  • Mercader Quesada Bullas Joven 2003

    Snoothrank:

10%carbonic Maceration 13.5%alcohol Dark in color though light intensity. Nose of earth, wet stone, pepper, with light vanilla and fresh blackberry. In the mouth it is very light with medium tannin and acidity. The finish is devoid of the nice fruit that is in the front palate. Very thin overall, and yet with the exception of body it does show m... Read More
