Murcia lies in the Southeast of Spain in the Levante province, named after the region’s capital on the Sigura river. French winemakers settled in the area in the second half of the 19th century after Phylloxera killed their crops at home. They came to realize the hot and dry Mediterranean climate with coastal winds resembled the Mourvèdre-growing areas of France, et voilà, the Spanish Monastrell grape was planted. The resulting wine is dark purple, and when produced with finesse, can be quite well structured and fruity, with balanced earth and minerality.
The region is home to Yecla and Bullas, but Jumilla is where the most quality expressions of the wine are produced. Other grapes grown and often blended with Monastrell are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The few white wines are made from Macabeo, Airen and Merseguera. Rosado and dessert styles are also produced.

  • Castano Yecla Solanera 2010

Interesting Spanish red blend of Monastrell (Mourvedre), Cab and Tintorera. Dark black fruits, plum, fig, a touch of something sweet that is wrapped up in some fairly drying tannins. Not overly complex but not bad for an inexpensive mid-week drinker. Read More
