Valdeorras Wine

“Valley of Gold” is the literal translation for Valdeorras, located inland in Northwest Spain. It is reported to be the very first place where grapes were grown and wine produced in Galicia, Spain. Ancient Romans originally came to the area in pursuit of gold. Once they had finished, they began planting grapes and making wine.  For centuries, the vines were overseen by religious orders.  It became a DO in 1945. The region is best known for resurrecting the Godello grape from near-extinction in the 1970s. The landscape is flat or gently rolling, as one would expect from a valley. The vineyards are located on the banks of the Sil river. The climate is primarily continental, with some Atlantic influences. Storms, extreme summe heat, and frost are all risks.

While the area is most well known for its age-worthy White Godello wines, there are some notable red wines made from the Mencia grape produced as well.

  • Have ever tried this one from Spain ;     Bodegas Abanico Rua Valdeorras                                                                    Has the following grapes: Palomino, Dona Blanca, Godello  Niche - but I liked a little better less chilled.  More nuanced as it warmed up.  Paul                                                           Read More

  • Bodegas Abanico Rua Valdeorras 2010

    Snoothrank:

Unique to say the least. Another, in what was a completely different night of wine tasting at the house. Cider vinegar right off the bad, not exacting the kind of intro that we'd thought, but different. After sitting and warming this develops a green herbal quality and a drop of honey that alone doesn't really set off any green lights, but with ... Read More

  • Vina Somoza Godello Sobre Lias 2013

    Snoothrank:

Medium light notes of oregano, melon and lemon brushes the nose with a hint of more spice and minerality in the glass. Chalky green apple and lemon notes in the mouth with a hint of something green showing through and a touch of phenolics as well, this turns steely on the midpalate and nestles down with some butter towards the finish. Like a Viognier with a bit more spice. Grassy apple melds with apricot for a long, sweet acidic finish. Excellent value. Great experience with an underwing grape variety! Read More

Really nice Spanish white from the Godello grape. Ripe peach, melon, a hint of lemon and a touch of perfume on the nose and palate. Medium finish with a touch of viscosity. Read More
