Rías Baixas Wine

This region lies along the Atlantic coastline in Galicia, in the northwest part of Spain. The ocean brings a cool microclimate with lots of wet weather, yielding lush, green fields.

It is known for producing Albariño, which is a dry, refreshing white wine with citrus and white stone fruit flavors, with a long, delightful floral finish. Some of these wines also have a light effervescence. The flavors are very versatile and can be paired with many Asian cuisines including sushi, as well as plenty of seafood and shellfish preparations, can take on a pesto, plus soups such as white gazpacho, cauliflower and even butternut squash.

Rías Baixas is divided into five subzones:

*Val do Salnes: the coolest area just touching the coastline. Known for producing some of the best wines of the region on gradual slopes and valley floors of the Umia river.
*Condado do Tea: the area farthest from the Atlantic with higher temperatures, producing quality Read more »

  • Martín Códax Albariño Rías Baixas Burgáns 2007

    Snoothrank:

Light golden in color with a lovely green sheen. Very typical aromas you would find from an Albariño including subtle notes of vanilla peach, shale and gorgeous white floral nose. After a weekend of ports, this is a fabulous transition! Nice round mouthfeel, despite it's hollow midpalate, and nice lingering mineral, pear and light creme finish. ... Read More

  • Martín Códax Albariño Rías Baixas Burgáns 2007

    Snoothrank:

Pale gold color with a perfect albarino nose. LIght smokey cream sits at the base of great flesh fruit flavors and floral minerals. Wow that is a hard one to grab, but really this is a nice nose that will keep you going to back to figure it out. In the mouth this wine is fat, and round with lots of nice body, though a light finish. Lime notes mi... Read More

  • Pazo de Señorans Albariño 2007

    Snoothrank:

First impression, big apricot aromas, followed by notes of straw, white peach, juicy green melon and a hint of ripe banana. Wait, add a touch of butter cream in there too. Wow, great acidity, but not overwhelming, rather like tasting a gentle wave of minerals lap over your tongue leaving a gentle green apple and a creamy white peach finish. I'm ... Read More

  • Pazo de Señorans Albariño 2007

    Snoothrank:

Pale gold color to this wine with a nose that seems to call for your attention while giving a riff on what it means to be a peach. Nectarine? Oh wait, melons from the south of France, orange and intense, ripe and rich. Or was it a mango in disguise, I love the indecision as I return to it for the next surprise. In the mouth I love the light spri... Read More

  • Adegas Galegas Rias Baixas Veigadares 2006

    Snoothrank:

This is a great white wine. The combination of albarino, treixadura and lourerio grapes, mostly albarino, makes the wine both tart and sweet. I love Albarino's but it can be at times tart. The addition of the two other grapes makes thisp erfect. Its crispy and goes well with fish and chicken. Read More

  • Pazo de Señorans Albariño 2006

    Snoothrank:

Have not met an Albarino that I didnt like. This one is special as I had this first in a restaurant with my best friend and ever since I have been emotional tied. This one is my favorite of all of the Albarinos that I have tasted exhibiting a Viognier like nose of dried apricots and peaches with a medium weight, and pure, clean flavors. Great w... Read More

  • Martín Códax Albariño Rías Baixas Burgáns 2005

    Snoothrank:

Nice, my first albarino. Distinctly different than other whites I drink, notable Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin blank. I get some lush fruitiness and a little spice. Long lasting finish, looking forward to searving to guests with some spicy camarones! Read More
