Rías Baixas Wine

This region lies along the Atlantic coastline in Galicia, in the northwest part of Spain. The ocean brings a cool microclimate with lots of wet weather, yielding lush, green fields.

It is known for producing Albariño, which is a dry, refreshing white wine with citrus and white stone fruit flavors, with a long, delightful floral finish. Some of these wines also have a light effervescence. The flavors are very versatile and can be paired with many Asian cuisines including sushi, as well as plenty of seafood and shellfish preparations, can take on a pesto, plus soups such as white gazpacho, cauliflower and even butternut squash.

Rías Baixas is divided into five subzones:

*Val do Salnes: the coolest area just touching the coastline. Known for producing some of the best wines of the region on gradual slopes and valley floors of the Umia river.
*Condado do Tea: the area farthest from the Atlantic with higher temperatures, producing quality Read more »

  • I haven't made an appearance on this thread for awhile, so I thought ... a ... a mid range Albarino from Rias Baixas (Terras Gauda O Rosal, 2009). Might also try a rose for comparison sake since I already have one open (a Malbec rose from Australia - Zorcal 2011). Who knows what will happen?! I sure as heck don't, but the experiment will be a ... Read More

  • Burgans Albariño Rías Baixas Rias Baixas 2011

    Snoothrank:

Really pretty clear pale yellow in the glass. Fairly floral nose. Crisp but fruity on initial taste--some citrus, some stone fruit, some tropical fruit. Nice acid tartness provides the crispness. An easy drinker. US$9.35 at Total WIne Read More

  • Boy, good luck.  I have had Txakoli only twice in my life.  Last ... ... but it is from the nearby Rias Baixas region.  However, the thing that Albarino has going for it is that it is pretty easy to find in the U.S.  You can even find it in high-volume retail stores.  Another idea is to try Portuguese Vinho Verde.  Another excellent seafood wi... • Tom, I agree with Jon that you have made a very compelling introduction. ... ... ever tried have been from Rias Baixas.  I know that there are some domestic wineries that have been producing it, but I have never had the opportunity to try one.  Since grapes often do not perform in an expected manner when they are raised in new geographies, and... • Licia Albariño Rías Baixas Licia 2011

    Snoothrank:

This shows an almost herbal note early on nose followed by peach and dried lemon pith aromas.Quite smooth and polished in the mouth, though with no shortage of brightening acidity, this shows rather intense lemon, quince and almost tropical fruit flavors. The finish reverts to lighter apple notes but superimposed on lovely suggestions of green t... Read More

  • Bodega Castro Martin Family Estate Selection Albarino 'Sobre Lias' 2011

    Snoothrank:

This has a lovely nose, all swathed in a gentle florality with soft apricot, plum, and tangerine aromas that show a little candied almond note. This is focused and fairly precise in the mouth with big acids lending a classic seashell note on the palate, and even a whisper of tannins supporting slightly herb toned green plum, lime and melon fruit...
