Rías Baixas Wine

This region lies along the Atlantic coastline in Galicia, in the northwest part of Spain. The ocean brings a cool microclimate with lots of wet weather, yielding lush, green fields.

It is known for producing Albariño, which is a dry, refreshing white wine with citrus and white stone fruit flavors, with a long, delightful floral finish. Some of these wines also have a light effervescence. The flavors are very versatile and can be paired with many Asian cuisines including sushi, as well as plenty of seafood and shellfish preparations, can take on a pesto, plus soups such as white gazpacho, cauliflower and even butternut squash.

Rías Baixas is divided into five subzones:

*Val do Salnes: the coolest area just touching the coastline. Known for producing some of the best wines of the region on gradual slopes and valley floors of the Umia river.
*Condado do Tea: the area farthest from the Atlantic with higher temperatures, producing quality Read more »

Rías Baixas on Snooth

  • Terras Gauda O Rosal 2011

    Snoothrank:

Terras Gauda is a good wine but one which does not quite justify its price. You can talk to many Gallegos who will tell you that once this bodega got pretty big the quality of the wine started to suffer. It's still a good wine but one that is more at home in the 13-15 dollar range. Read More

  • Bodegas Terras de Lantano Albarino Vina Cartin Rias Baixas NV

    Snoothrank:

Do yourself a favor and try this under appreciated Albarinho wine from Galicia. It is one of the best Galician whites at this price level. Has had a higher rating than Terras Gaudas at half the price. Read More

  • Albarino Pazo Senorans 2011

    Snoothrank:

Not much in the way of aromas, although, son-of-a-gun, there is a mint thing happening. Very pleaant on the palate. Initial sensation is crisp and refreshing. Noticealbe apple flavor--Granny Smith to be specific. Apple note comes with pleasant acid structure, US$17.99 at Total WIne Read More

  • Albarino Estylo Puro 2011

    Snoothrank:

Pale yellow colour with very slight green tinge. A complex yet subtle nose (floral - not really perfume but more sweet grass/wildflower/chamomile tea, honey, stonefruit, and just a hint of salty/sharp minerality. Really intense and complex on the palate, which was a nice surprise. No oak and complex fruit ranging from crisp apple to sweet stonef... Read More

  • Val Do Sosego Albariño Rías Baixas 2010

    Snoothrank:

Reminds me of a fine Rhone blend with a bit more richness. Nicely balanced fruit, acid and alcohol (12.5%). There is a fine tongue coating texture that pairs well with the slightly citrusy front end. Read More

  • Bodega Castro Martin Family Estate Selection 'Sobre Lias' 2011

Rich balanced aroma with pears, celery seed, pineapple, and hazelnut. The body is tart and strong on the fore-palate, with a buttery and high-mineral finish. Read More
