Galicia Wine

Located on the northwest corner of Spain, Galicia is just under Portugal, along the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a wet, humid climate with a chilly wind, similar to Ireland or Scotland, with corresponding green pastures.

The most famous D.O. in the area is Rías Baixas, renown for white wines made from the Albariño grape. These wines are versatile pairing partners with many cuisines (especially seafood) and are refreshing and light, with citrus and tropical flavors and good acidity.

This is also home to Ribeira Sacra more inland, which primarily produces wines from the Mencia grape. These tend to be lighter in style than Bierzos and can be served to great effect with a slight chill. Other grapes grown in the area are Godello, Treixadura and Albariño.

Even farther inland, with a much drier climate is D.O. Monterrei. This area is mostly known for dry whites made with Doña Blanca, Treixadura and Godello. Some reds are also produced from Read more »

  • Coto de Gomariz Colleita 2007

    Snoothrank:

First words that come to mind with this wine: crisp, fresh, alive, zesty and fun. Simple citrus, mineral and raw almond notes on the nose with a touch of fresh herbs hovering over the glass. In the mouth, the wine is ....oh yes...Zesty! Fabulous mineral flavors highlighted by this racy acidity and a light body that ends in tingly long citrus fin... Read More

  • Coto de Gomariz Colleita Seccionada 2006

    Snoothrank:

This wine shows a great funky nose, filled with earthy notes of fresh mushrooms and banana layered with a light floral scent. In the mouth, the wine shows soft, delicate acidity that only peaks right near the end of the sip right near the back corners of my palate. If you have a lemon drop candy, that exact same sour indicator in the mouth is wh... Read More

  • Ventura D Vina Do Burato Ribeira Sacra Red 2007

    Snoothrank:

Opening with spicy , sappy red berry fruits and a flourish of sweet herbal tones this if fresh and bright smelling. Gentle though grippy tannins and juicy acids combine for an easy but not soft mouthfeel that highlights the minerally, almost salty red fruits of this crisp, crunchy, fresh wine. Guzzle it up! 91pts Read More

  • A Coroa Godello Valdeorras 2006

    Snoothrank:

Tangy, with a slightly bitter aftertaste, but not unpleasant. The flavor is difficult to pin down: it's not particularly fruity, but has enough acid to make it satisfying. The mouthfeel is a little glycerine, and the finish long. Read More
