Galicia Wine

Located on the northwest corner of Spain, Galicia is just under Portugal, along the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a wet, humid climate with a chilly wind, similar to Ireland or Scotland, with corresponding green pastures.

The most famous D.O. in the area is Rías Baixas, renown for white wines made from the Albariño grape. These wines are versatile pairing partners with many cuisines (especially seafood) and are refreshing and light, with citrus and tropical flavors and good acidity.

This is also home to Ribeira Sacra more inland, which primarily produces wines from the Mencia grape. These tend to be lighter in style than Bierzos and can be served to great effect with a slight chill. Other grapes grown in the area are Godello, Treixadura and Albariño.

Even farther inland, with a much drier climate is D.O. Monterrei. This area is mostly known for dry whites made with Doña Blanca, Treixadura and Godello. Some reds are also produced from Read more »

Galicia on Snooth

  • Albarino de Fefinanes Spain 2005

    Snoothrank:

Light gold/green in color. Bright fruit, with light peach and lime notes. Just bottled and thus has a slight sparkle in the mouth and it needs a bit of time to calm down. Flavors of melon, lime, make this wine a fresh fun wine to drink. 3.5/5 [NR] Read More

  • Bodegas Rafael Palacios Godello Valdeorras As Sortes 2004

    Snoothrank:

Light gold in color. The nose is a mushroomy oak palate with nuances of pineapple overlaid. Medium acidity and creamy in the mouth. The body is medium to big with a creamy richness throughout. The palate has some of the pineapple of the nose with a creamy peach custard like flavor. Great wine from a grape unknown outside of Spain. 4/5 [NR] Read More

  • Adegas Galegas S.l. Albariño Rías Baixas Don Pedro de Soutomaior Macerado En Neve Carbonica 2005

    Snoothrank:

Very clear with a nose of citrus and flowers. Bone dry in the mouth with a high acidity. The palate reminds me of Harrelson apples I used to pick as a child in Minnesota, followed by citrus, and fresh peach flesh. Crisp and refreshing, really a fun wine. 4/5 [NR] Read More

  • Adega Mondelo Ribeira Sacra Porvide Men Ia 2004

    Snoothrank:

Dark reddish color. Nose shows raspberry, black pepper, wet earth, and gingerbread. Medium acid and firm tannins fill the mouth. In the mouth dark earth, pepper and rich fruit all mingle. Really a nice example of the power this grape has. 3/5 [NR] Read More

    Snoothrank:

Light golden in color. The nose is candy like with creamy fruit and daisey like floral notes. Overall very dry with a medium acidity that keeps it fresh. Primary flavors are of golden apple with some floral hints thrown in. Tasty though not really enough body to make it interesting. 2.5/5 [NR] Read More

  • Bodega Jesús Nazareno S.c.g. Valdeorras Aurensis Blanco Barrica 2004

    Snoothrank:

Soft gold in color. The nose presents mushroom, wet earth, light lime, and as weird as it seems, buttery grass! Off-dry to sweet in the mouth the acidity is medium. Light peach, lime, and grass, though it seems like reduction played a part in this wine. alt-2.5 [NR] Read More
