Galicia Wine

Located on the northwest corner of Spain, Galicia is just under Portugal, along the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a wet, humid climate with a chilly wind, similar to Ireland or Scotland, with corresponding green pastures.

The most famous D.O. in the area is Rías Baixas, renown for white wines made from the Albariño grape. These wines are versatile pairing partners with many cuisines (especially seafood) and are refreshing and light, with citrus and tropical flavors and good acidity.

This is also home to Ribeira Sacra more inland, which primarily produces wines from the Mencia grape. These tend to be lighter in style than Bierzos and can be served to great effect with a slight chill. Other grapes grown in the area are Godello, Treixadura and Albariño.

Even farther inland, with a much drier climate is D.O. Monterrei. This area is mostly known for dry whites made with Doña Blanca, Treixadura and Godello. Some reds are also produced from Read more »

Galicia on Snooth

  • Torres Pazo Das Bruxas Albarino 2013

    Snoothrank:

Quite lovely. Golden in the Glass. Loads of Herbs, Minerals, and Stone Fruit. High level of Acidity, but with a surprising roundness, even oilyness, in the mouth. There seems to be a bit of oak which provides a long, smooth finish. Bits of Orange Rind as it opens up.One of the better Albarinos I have had. Read More

This is emollient in the mouth with soft fleshy fruit notes of melon and papaya, a bit of creaminess coming through on the mi2015d palate amidst the green apple and lemon notes, and finishing a bit grassy and waxy with good length. • Terras Gauda 2014

    Snoothrank:

Intriguingly nutty bouquet of almond and maraschino cherry with more classic white wine notes of lemon meringue and green apple. Palate is lightly spiced and quite velvety with green apple and pear notes, tart acidity and excellent balance, with a finish of toast and butter covered in lemon zest. Beautiful wine.91 pts Read More

  • Vina Somoza Godello Sobre Lias 2013

    Snoothrank:

Medium light notes of oregano, melon and lemon brushes the nose with a hint of more spice and minerality in the glass. Chalky green apple and lemon notes in the mouth with a hint of something green showing through and a touch of phenolics as well, this turns steely on the midpalate and nestles down with some butter towards the finish.
