Galicia Wine

Located on the northwest corner of Spain, Galicia is just under Portugal, along the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a wet, humid climate with a chilly wind, similar to Ireland or Scotland, with corresponding green pastures.

The most famous D.O. in the area is Rías Baixas, renown for white wines made from the Albariño grape. These wines are versatile pairing partners with many cuisines (especially seafood) and are refreshing and light, with citrus and tropical flavors and good acidity.

This is also home to Ribeira Sacra more inland, which primarily produces wines from the Mencia grape. These tend to be lighter in style than Bierzos and can be served to great effect with a slight chill. Other grapes grown in the area are Godello, Treixadura and Albariño.

Even farther inland, with a much drier climate is D.O. Monterrei. This area is mostly known for dry whites made with Doña Blanca, Treixadura and Godello. Some reds are also produced from Read more »

Galicia on Snooth

  • Pazo de Senorans Albarino Rias Baixas 2014

    Snoothrank:

Light refreshing mineral notes of lemongrass and lemon zest with a hint of mint and white pepper. Generous flavors of ripe peach, melon, persimmon and lemon on the palate with a perky acidity and a hint of effervescence through the midpalate. Finishes light but long with a nice creaminess and more mineral salinity. Read More

  • Altos de Torona Albariño Sobre Lias 2015

    Snoothrank:

Focused salinity, stony minerality and ocean air on the nose are classic and expressive. Opens nicely on the palate with bright grapefruit, lime and melon fruit, tart acidity and more minerality coming through. This is canonically Albariño, freshly fruited and nicely balanced. Read More

  • Vionta Albarino Rias Baixas 2014

    Snoothrank:

Creamy lemon meringue notes with toasted hazelnuts and sustained fresh lemon underlying the complexity. Pleasantly crisp and fresh in the mouth on entry but with an earthy toast and creaminess supporting the fruit and rounding out the textured mouthfeel, finishing clean and light once more with melon and lemon fading into a toasty memory. • Martin Codax Albarino Rias Baixas 2015

    Snoothrank:

Sweetly floral on the nose with excellent minerality, sea breezes, sunflower seeds and lime zest. Gentle citrus notes on the palate with a stony backbone, green apple and lemon fruit filling the center and a tart acidity towards the finish that plays nicely against a creamy nuttiness. Read More

  • Vina Zaco Albarino Rías Baixas 2015

    Snoothrank:

Frosted lemon, mineral salinity and hints of white peach on the nose with a whiff of sea breeze. Tart, rich and refreshing on the palate, this brings zesty grapefruit, lemon and melon fruit flavors alongside a bite of acidity, finishing with citrus zest and creamy melon. Read More
