Montsant Wine

 

This little wine-making area is part of Catalonia in Tarragona, and is to many considered a “baby Priorat” since it surrounds that region, producing wines from many of the same grapes and styles. But these wines have less pedigree and are considerably more affordable, but can be comparable in quality. In other words, this is a great go to region if you want a Priorat style on a budget. 
 
Montsant also shares much of Priorat’s distinguishable soil type, licorella, which is comprised mostly of granite and slate, with a shiny, black appearance. The vines are on elevated slopes which get plenty of sun by day and benefit from cooler temperatures at night. These conditions produce grapes that make complex wines of excellent quality and food friendliness.
