Montsant Wine

This little wine-making area is part of Catalonia in Tarragona, and is to many considered a “baby Priorat” since it surrounds that region, producing wines from many of the same grapes and styles. But these wines have less pedigree and are considerably more affordable, but can be comparable in quality. In other words, this is a great go to region if you want a Priorat style on a budget.
Montsant also shares much of Priorat’s distinguishable soil type, licorella, which is comprised mostly of granite and slate, with a shiny, black appearance. The vines are on elevated slopes which get plenty of sun by day and benefit from cooler temperatures at night. These conditions produce grapes that make complex wines of excellent quality and food friendliness.
The main grapes grown are Garnacha and Cariñena. Other grapes such as Ull de Llebre (the local Tempranillo name), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also grown and sometimes used as blending Read more »

Lightly ethanolic nose - this wine reminds me of a mini Barolo. Acorns and leather lead to bitter cherry followed by some sweeter black cherry on the finish. Read More

We were meeting in the ... ... the cellar.2004 Buil & Giné Montsant Baboix - This is another decidedly modern Spanish bruiser and its packed with lovely herbal, mineral and spice tones embedded in rich cassis and blackberry fruit. • Acoustic Vinyes Velles 2006

A little expensive perhaps (the victim of the poor pound!) but a delicious, stylish wine. Montsant is a small region lapping around Priorat (had to look that up on an excellent map available at the tasting) that most seemed unfamiliar with. A super blend of Garnacha and Carinena from 15 - 35 year old vines. Read More

Deep black fruit on the nose -- a bit sweet with good potency. Good acidity and the deep flavors in this bottle makes it a great food wine. Read More

  • Buil & Gine Baboix Montsant 2004

This is a bit of a bruiser with dark, spicy fruit on the nose. Lots of cassis and blackberry compete with spice and mineral notes and there is an undercurrent of herbs sauteeed in butter. Pretty well balanced in the moth with fine acidity and a bit of a creamy, rounded feel. The flavors are bright, juicy, and pretty intensely spicy with a bit of... Read More

  • Can Blau Celler Can Blau 2007

A Spanish classic; inky GSM (Grenach Syrah Mazuelo) blend you can chew on. I hesitate to say the 2007 is drinking really well now (Spring 2009), give it a year to mellow out and it will be as delightful as the 06. Read More

  • Cellars Baronia Montsant Flor d'Englora Negre Jove 2006

I'll admit that I am in no way a wine fan. I was at Costco of all places and liked the description they gave of this wine and decided to try it. Again I'm not a wine fan but I really enjoy this wine. It's not as dry as other reds I have tried and the taste is very sharp at first and then smooths out, I like that. I went back this evening and ... Read More
