Montsant Wine

This little wine-making area is part of Catalonia in Tarragona, and is to many considered a “baby Priorat” since it surrounds that region, producing wines from many of the same grapes and styles. But these wines have less pedigree and are considerably more affordable, but can be comparable in quality. In other words, this is a great go to region if you want a Priorat style on a budget.
Montsant also shares much of Priorat’s distinguishable soil type, licorella, which is comprised mostly of granite and slate, with a shiny, black appearance. The vines are on elevated slopes which get plenty of sun by day and benefit from cooler temperatures at night. These conditions produce grapes that make complex wines of excellent quality and food friendliness.
The main grapes grown are Garnacha and Cariñena. Other grapes such as Ull de Llebre (the local Tempranillo name), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also grown and sometimes used as blending Read more »

  • Vinos Sin-Ley Garnacha "G2" Monsant 2007

This wine was ok. It has hints of herb, flowers, dark fruit and spice. The spice comes very forward when drinking, actually surprisingly so. But, beyond that... this wine is just that.. spicy but not particularly note worthy. I would have it again with food, but not a special meal. Read More

  • Celler de Capçanes Montsant Mas Donís Barrica 2004

A very good daily wine with no pretensions and much better than most wines in this price category. Actually more drinkable than the more complex 2005 vintage. Worth getting a case if you like Grenache. Not too new worldy like the 2005. Think of a nice house wine with Tapas in a dive in Madrid and this fits the bill. Read More

  • Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica 2005

This is a more interesting vintage than the 2004 which I liked as a daily wine and technically better but it seems a bit too young to drink now. Nothing disturbing but feels a bit raw. Didn't try decanting it. Not sure if it will age well but keeping a few bottles to see for next year. 2004 is much more drinkable now although a cut below. Good v... Read More

  • Can Blau 2007

Inky extracted color in the glass going to lighter purple on the rim. Notes of woody spice, dark plum, blueberry, and hints of strawberry on the nose. Concentrated ripe cherry and jammy dark fruit hit the palate with silky tannins; medium acid. A complex, but smooth finish. Well done.I really liked this wine. Easy drinking and quite a barga... • Celler de Capçanes Montsant Mas Donís Barrica 2004

Possibly the best value on the market year after year. These old vine blends coming out of Spain are awesome deals and exhibit a quality and craftsmanship comparable to(often better than) the Rhone's best. Read More
