This little wine-making area is part of Catalonia in Tarragona, and is to many considered a “baby Priorat” since it surrounds that region, producing wines from many of the same grapes and styles. But these wines have less pedigree and are considerably more affordable, but can be comparable in quality. In other words, this is a great go to region if you want a Priorat style on a budget.

Montsant also shares much of Priorat’s distinguishable soil type, licorella, which is comprised mostly of granite and slate, with a shiny, black appearance. The vines are on elevated slopes which get plenty of sun by day and benefit from cooler temperatures at night. These conditions produce grapes that make complex wines of excellent quality and food friendliness.

The main grapes grown are Garnacha and Cariñena. Other grapes such as Ull de Llebre (the local Tempranillo name), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also grown and sometimes used as blending Read more »

  • I should add that GregT (too modest to say it himself) is one of the foremost ... great product from Yeclas or Montsant.  You can do the homework and paperwork and bring in many containers full of great wine, but say it gets stuck on the dock, or your warehouse goes out of business, or your distributor puts his effort elsewhere, those costs ar... • We tried six wines at a free Whole Foods wine tasting event last night, and ... was a Mas Picosa Capcanes Montsant from north-west Spain.  You could sense the berry flavor and overall jammy fruits in this one.  Yes, we bought a bottle of this too.  It was paired with some salami.  Overall, we enjoyed the tastin Read More

  • Capcanes El Raval Montsant 2011

    Snoothrank:

80% Garnacha, 20% Carignan Inky and mineral scented on the nose with a nice base of leathery dried strawberry fruit flecked with white pepper and a bit of a grilled meaty base note. A little sweet on entry, though with enough acid to help keep this fresh in the mouth. The texture is lovely, soft and clear in the mouth with some attractive inky... Read More

  • Pinyolet Seleccion 2009

    Snoothrank:

80% Garnacha, 20% Carignan Smoky and a bit funky on the nose and quite leathery like an old catchers mitt. This gains nice white pepper spice and floral tones with some air but remains somewhat low key on the nose. Very smooth and polished, another wine that sneaks across the palate with its near perfect balance and integration of acid and tanni... Read More

  • Celler de Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica Old Vines 2010

    Snoothrank:

85% Garnachas 15% Syrah Hugely aromatic, this explodes in the glass with darkly plummy fruit, sweet licorice candied notes, leather, earth, and candied violet aromas. Soft and compact on entry, there's real depth on the palate here. The tannins sit low in the earthy, licorice driven fruit that is supported by well integrated acids lending this a... Read More

  • 2009 Bula Montsant - dark fruit on the attack, lots of mocha on midpalate and finish, which is long. Good balance, not tannic, a bit hot but good for current drinking.
