Montsant Wine

This little wine-making area is part of Catalonia in Tarragona, and is to many considered a “baby Priorat” since it surrounds that region, producing wines from many of the same grapes and styles. But these wines have less pedigree and are considerably more affordable, but can be comparable in quality. In other words, this is a great go to region if you want a Priorat style on a budget.

Montsant also shares much of Priorat’s distinguishable soil type, licorella, which is comprised mostly of granite and slate, with a shiny, black appearance. The vines are on elevated slopes which get plenty of sun by day and benefit from cooler temperatures at night. These conditions produce grapes that make complex wines of excellent quality and food friendliness.

The main grapes grown are Garnacha and Cariñena. Other grapes such as Ull de Llebre (the local Tempranillo name), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also grown and sometimes used as blending Read more »

Montsant on Snooth

  • Gosh.  $22 is a bargain for Priorat.  Good job.So look for Montsant. It surrounds Priorat like a donut and part of it has exactly the same soil types but it was kept out of the DO when the lines were drawn. Some good values for the same grapes and some of the same producers.Had a few wines from Moldova the other day but no pics. And Uruguay. Ton... Read More

  • Good pointer on the Montsant, Greg. Any producers you like there?Tonight it's bourbon and very hoppsy German-standards-of-purity craft beer. Upscale boilermakers, as it were. And ridiculously priced upscale burgers. But good company! Read More

  • Celler Can Blau "Can Blau" Montsant 2009

    Snoothrank:

In a word - DAMN! All the hype said outstanding (Just the label gives it that..,thinks 60's party.) Loads of blueberry, blackberry, forest accents, cocoa and anise with a light citrus around the edge. A minor woody note and warm spice round out the nose - well not the nose, but the aromas. The mid-palate is juicy wet with sweet tannins that are ... Read More

  • 2009 Bula Montsant - dark fruit on the attack, lots of mocha on midpalate and finish, which is long. Good balance, not tannic, a bit hot but good for current drinking.
