Tarragona is located in the Catalonia region of northern Spain. It is divided into two sections: The largest expanse is along the Mediterranean just south of Penedes, and the other is further inland. The reason for this division is the the creation of the D.O. Montsant, which was separated from the rest of Tarragona in 2001.
The region began as far back as the Roman era, known for its sweet wines from late harvest Garnacha and Moscatel. More recently the Cava grapes, Paralleda, Xarel-lo and Macabeo have been grown and sourced to Penedes Cava production.
Garnacha is made into rosado and in blends with Cariñena. Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also grown.
