Penedès is considered the most important wine region in Catalunyia (Catalonia), and is located near Barcelona. The area is known for producing sparkling Cava, which began production in the 1870’s, and is produced in styles ranging from value driven sparklers to vintage releases made in the Methode Champenoise. While these wines get most of the spotlight, the area also produces significant still whites and reds.
It is divided into three regions:
*Baix (Bajo) Penedes, the warmest region, with production of red wines made from Garnacha, Monastrell and Cariñena.
*Medio Penedes, which has the highest amount of production for being the main source of the Cava grapes Macabeo, Paralleda and Xarell-lo as well as reds made from Ull de Liebre (Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
*Alt Penedes has the highest elevation and grows Paralleda for Cava, as well as excellent whites made from Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer Read more »
