Description 1 of 2

Catalunya (Catalonia in Spanish) is located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula and is home to many famous Spanish subregions. It is in an ideal location for wine making thanks to a diverse climate. The coast is known for dry and hot summers and mild winters (the Mediterranean climate). Inland It is very hot in the summer and cold in the Winter (the Mediterranean Continental climate). And north to the Pyrenees has a climate typical of high mountain regions with very cold and snowy winters and hot summers with abundant rainfall.

Wine has been produced here since the time of the Romans, who started planting and producing grapes near Tarragona (which was the Iberian capital at the time). Since then, the winemaking region spread and flourished until the 19th century Phylloxera crisis killed most of the red grapes grown there.

Luckily for the Raventos family, conditions worked out in Penedes to replant vines and produce the first Cava, which is now the area’s most lucrative product. Cava consists of Macabeo, Paralleda and Xarel-lo grapes and is made in styles ranging from value-driven non-vintage sparklers to Methode Champenoise vintage releases.

Another notable D.O. is Priorat, with prized, and often expensive wines made mainly from Garnacha and Cariñena. Nearby is Montsant, which produces wines in a similar, Chateauneuf du Pape-like, hearty style, but usually more affordably.

Other D.O.’s produce mostly red wines and consist of Costers del Segre, Tarragona, Terra Alta, Conca de Barbera, Pla de Bages and the mainly white wine-producing Alella. The D.O. Catalunya is a catch-all for wines made in any of these subregions.

Description 2 of 2

Catalunya (Catalonia in spanish) is one of the Autonomous Communities of Spain located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. A great location of the region makes it magnificent for wine making thanks to a diverse climate. The coastal part is known for dry and hot summers and mild winters (The Mediterranean climate), the inland part is very hot in the summer and cold in the Winter (The Mediterranean Continental climate) and the part closest to the Pyrenees Mountains has a climate typical of high mountains with very cold and snowy winters and hot summers abundant with rainfalls. The wine has been produced here since the Roman Times (II c. b.c.) who started planting the varieties and manufacturing quality reds around Tarragona (back in the time the capital of the Peninsula). Since then the idea spread out to other parts of Catalunya and has played an important role in country’s economy until the 19th century when a disease ( phylloxera) hit the region and killed Catalonia's vineyards that comprised over 80% red wine grapes. Just about at the same time CAVA (white sparking wine) was beginning to be manufactured by the Raventos family therefore with all the red varieties dead a planting of more white wine grapes was encouraged. Hence 95% of wines with DO Cava (see below) is produced in Catalunya. Thanks to pioneers like Jean Leon and Miguel Torres who in the seventies decided to regain the long tradition of red wine making new varieties and modern methods were introduced to the region making it one of the most important areas on the Word winery map. Today Catalunya has 10 regions of Denominació d'Origen (DO): Alella, Ampurdán-Costa Brava, Catalunya, Conca de Barberá, Costers del Segre, Montsant, Penedés, Pla de Bages, Tarragona , Terra Alta and 1 Denominació d'Origen Qualificada (DOQ) which the Priorat (one of the Spain’s two DOQs). There is also a DO Cava that is associated mainly with Penedes region. All the regions cover an area of approx. 120.000 hectares of land and include sparkling Cava, dry white wines and powerful reds. Among many varietes planted in the region the traditional ones are: white wine grapes of Macabeo, Picapoll and Xarello, the red wine grapes of Monestrell, Tempranillo (known as ull de llebre) , Malvasia, Garnacha and Sumoll. – Description from MediatiK
