Catalunya Wine

Catalunya (Catalonia in Spanish) is located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula and is home to many famous Spanish subregions. It is in an ideal location for wine making thanks to a diverse climate. The coast is known for dry and hot summers and mild winters (the Mediterranean climate). Inland It is very hot in the summer and cold in the Winter (the Mediterranean Continental climate). And north to the Pyrenees has a climate typical of high mountain regions with very cold and snowy winters and hot summers with abundant rainfall.
Wine has been produced here since the time of the Romans, who started planting and producing grapes near Tarragona (which was the Iberian capital at the time). Since then, the winemaking region spread and flourished until the 19th century Phylloxera crisis killed most of the red grapes grown there.

  • Torres Coronas 2009

Earthy soil/black cherry/cranberry in color and with good clarity. Aromas of heavy black cherry, hints of tobacco and leather, plums, some spice and perhaps a little alcohol. The flavors follow suit with added black pepper spice warmth, slight booze, lots of Cabernet juicyness, and spots of Spanish flare! The mouthfeel is smooth, medium bodied... Read More

  • Well it's part of Catalunya and Penedès is where they started making Cava, so you're in good shape. Barcelona isn't far from Priorat, so look for some of those wines. They tend to be expensive, but you can find a few that are reasonable. Look for smaller producers of Cava - there's some real good stuff made that doesn't get exported. You can fin... Read More

  • Besllum Monstant 2008

Never had anything by this producer and to be honest I should have waited - but thank the Lord that I have a good aerator and a wide body decanter...this needed both. Inky purple with a clear ring. Lush, heavy nose of violets, blackberry, currant, vanilla, smokey oak (nuanced) with dark cherry. The palate - this is a powerful, teeth & tongue coa... Read More

  • Celler Can Blau "Can Blau" Montsant 2009

In a word - DAMN! All the hype said outstanding (Just the label gives it that..,thinks 60's party.) Loads of blueberry, blackberry, forest accents, cocoa and anise with a light citrus around the edge. A minor woody note and warm spice round out the nose - well not the nose, but the aromas. The mid-palate is juicy wet with sweet tannins that are ... Read More
