Catalunya Wine

Catalunya (Catalonia in Spanish) is located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula and is home to many famous Spanish subregions. It is in an ideal location for wine making thanks to a diverse climate. The coast is known for dry and hot summers and mild winters (the Mediterranean climate). Inland It is very hot in the summer and cold in the Winter (the Mediterranean Continental climate). And north to the Pyrenees has a climate typical of high mountain regions with very cold and snowy winters and hot summers with abundant rainfall.
Wine has been produced here since the time of the Romans, who started planting and producing grapes near Tarragona (which was the Iberian capital at the time). Since then, the winemaking region spread and flourished until the 19th century Phylloxera crisis killed most of the red grapes grown there.
Luckily for the Raventos family, conditions worked out in Penedes to replant vines and produce the first Cava, which is now the area&rsquo Read more »

  • Montebro Priorat Crianza 2010

Picked this one up at Jubilation. Dark, opaque, and inky in the glass. Full of spice, fig, vanilla, boysenberry, and blueberry on the nose. Medium body, soft, but a big mouthfull. Long finish with more complex savory and earthy notes. Very easy to drink, got along well with a grilled Steak and Mushroom and Carmelized Onion Chipolte Cream Sauce.... Read More

  • Melis Grenache Blend Priorat 2005

PnPed. Quite fruity (not California PN fruity) with red plum, strawberry flavors with some vanilla oak. Very little acid, and even though I am an acid bigot, this is not translated into a minus. A medium-bodied wine whose tannins appear to have settled nicely. A very enjoyable wine. Read More

  • Celler de Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica Old Vines 2012

Nice substantial red that makes an ideal accompaniment to steak or lamb. When the opportunity to buy this comes along, I always get a few bottles. It has been consistently good from year to year. Big bang for the buck. Read More

  • Mas Doix Salanques Priorat 2010

A very nice priorat. Ripe black cherry and smooth fine grained tannins give this grenache based Spanish red nicely balanced flavor and a really nice mouthfeel. Nicely tamed, not your overpowering Priorat. Read More

  • Conreria d'Scala Dei Black Slate 'La Morera' Blanc 2012

Really, really nice Spanish white blend from Priorat of 91% Grenache Blanc and 9% Pedro Ximenez. Juicy and complex with white peach, honeysuckle, apricot, a touch of vanilla, nice minerality, decent acidity and a very nice finish. Excellent QPR at around $15. Read More

  • Mas la Plana. Torres 2010

Darkest Mediterranean cherry on the nose with musk and perhaps campfire smoke; the entry is deep cherry (100% Tempranillo) with a warm vanilla and slight bitterness (oak) on the back palate. The finish is medium and overall balance is very good. Nice for the price. 88 points. Read More
