Ribera Del Duero Wine

This region is located within Castilla y Leon and runs along the Duero River. The area concentrates mainly on red wines starring Tinto Fino (a.k.a. Tinto del Pais, a.k.a. Tempranillo). This is customarily blended with indigenous Garnacha and other Spanish-grown French grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec and Merlot. The only white grape produced is Albillo, which is mostly consumed locally.

The area has been producing wines for many centuries, since the Roman era. Up until the 1970’s, bodega Vega Sicilia hogged most of the spotlight until the 1980’s when Alejandro Fernandez and his bodega Pesquera gained attention, with others cult favorites like Pingus and Abadia Retuerta soon to follow. Now the region consists of a mix of traditional wine-making to more modern experimentation as well as accessible, quality table wines.

Ribera Del Duero on Snooth

  • Didn't bother mentioning Madrid as a base because a) that's talking ... ... Madrid? Forgettabout it. Ribera del Duero is much closer but Valencia still seems the smaller, more accessible area and easier to cope with. And it'll likely be warmer, too. I'd start talking first with #3 (intothevineyard) and see how customizable a visit could be mad... Read More

  • Maybe we need to start a thread about making vinegar.  I'm a ... ... pretty well: I learned about Ribera del Duero and Priorat on great inexpensive bottles (Scala Dei--every wine they made--for under $14 per), but there are bad streaks, too.  At one point I have about 5 750ml bottles vinegaring on the kitchen counter.  Still, when you consider... • I think you have some good wines but it's not because I've had those ... great in Napa and Rioja and Ribera del Duero, which I was more interested in. I'd probably drink that one already. It was a vintage that a lot of restaurants picked up. When those wines actually came on the market after bottling, people already knew that the 1995 was goin... Read More
