for this region?

This region is located north-northwest of Madrid. Its terrain is a combination of flat, open plains banded by hills and mountains. The Duero River cuts through it on its way to Douro in Portugal.

Rueda is its most famous white wine, with the primary grape of Verdejo. These wines tend to have flavors of summer fruits and a refreshing acidity with many pairing possibilities from sushi and Asian dishes to scallops and other shellfish and even cool summer soups like chilled sweet pea. Another important white wine of the area is Godello. These wines tend to be more dry than Ruedas, with more minerality and zing.

But this region is most famous for its reds. Most notable, the Tinto Fino (a.k.a. Tinto Fina, a.k.a. Tinto del Pais, a.k.a. Tinta de Toro, a.k.a. Tempranillo) driven Ribero del Dueros, Zamoras and Toros. This area is also home to the D.O. Bierzo, known for wines made from Cabernet Franc’s cousin Mencia, which are often rustic, but versatile, rich in flavor and value Read more »

  • Bodegas Resalte de Penafiel Gran Resalte 2001

    Snoothrank:

The wine is rich ruby color in the glass with great clarity. The nose presents pleasant aromas of blackberry, ripe plum, leather and tobacco. The taste is simply breathtaking, a building crescendo of black fruit at the outset, blackberry, plum and cherry that transitions effortlessly to some meaty notes of mocha and dark chocolate midpalate. ... • Concha Y Toro Serie Riberas Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a somewhat lighter color, with some deep purple transitioning to bright ruby along the edges. The nose is somewhat of an old world sort of blend of blackberry, cassis, intermingled with dried herbs and spice. The taste is a dichotomy of rich black fruit married against some fairly tart acidity, so that based on the aromas, you expec... Read More

  • Valtravieso Crianza 2013

    Snoothrank:

Soft, inviting and fruity on the nose, this brings a mix of red fruit notes of strawberry, cherry and raspberry along with a touch of smoke and savory bouillon. Dry and earthy on the palate with oak and black olive set against cranberry and strawberry fruit, this has plenty of structure and earth on the finish, dropping all fruit to the backgrou... • I bought a bottle of Palacio de Arganza Tinto 1998 today in Barcelona for E7.85. I'm from New Zealand where we drink our own NZ and Australian reds, and where the mark-up bumps up the price of Spanish imports. It seemed to go very well with tomato, red capsicum, parmesan cheese, olive oil and "rustica" bread. I've searched for information on thi...
