for this region?

This region is located north-northwest of Madrid. Its terrain is a combination of flat, open plains banded by hills and mountains. The Duero River cuts through it on its way to Douro in Portugal.

Rueda is its most famous white wine, with the primary grape of Verdejo. These wines tend to have flavors of summer fruits and a refreshing acidity with many pairing possibilities from sushi and Asian dishes to scallops and other shellfish and even cool summer soups like chilled sweet pea. Another important white wine of the area is Godello. These wines tend to be more dry than Ruedas, with more minerality and zing.

But this region is most famous for its reds. Most notable, the Tinto Fino (a.k.a. Tinto Fina, a.k.a. Tinto del Pais, a.k.a. Tinta de Toro, a.k.a. Tempranillo) driven Ribero del Dueros, Zamoras and Toros. This area is also home to the D.O. Bierzo, known for wines made from Cabernet Franc’s cousin Mencia, which are often rustic, but versatile, rich in flavor and value Read more »

  • Milcampos Tempranillo Vinas Viejas 2010

    Snoothrank:

This is a very fine Ribera del Duero wine for the price. Although a bit slow to open - even after aeration and decanting - the nose does reveal bright raspberry and dipped cigar. On the palate, there is a smooth yet slightly tannic, entry with less raspberry and more cherry - even blueberry poking through. The wine has a lengthy, pucker-like f... Read More

  • Capotazo Toro Tempranillo 2011

    Snoothrank:

A selection from Lot 18;I found their Tasting Notes pretty accurate: 'This is a dark, brooding and complex wine dominated by intense baked fruit notes of plum, black cherry and blackberry jam. Full-bodied, with grippy, mouth-coating tannins, the wine has shooting through it a zingy acidity. After just a few years in bottle it is starting to disp... Read More

  • Finca Museum Cigales Tempranillo Rosado Vinea 2013

    Snoothrank:

Elegant strawberry aromas with kiwi and white grape. Flavors are bright and acidic, more strawberry, a hint of cherry, watermelon rind, red licorice and a touch of orange marmalade. The long finish has more cherries and raspberries and finishes off quite tart. Read More

  • I bought a bottle of Palacio de Arganza Tinto 1998 today in Barcelona for E7.85. I'm from New Zealand where we drink our own NZ and Australian reds, and where the mark-up bumps up the price of Spanish imports. It seemed to go very well with tomato, red capsicum, parmesan cheese, olive oil and "rustica" bread. I've searched for information on thi...
