Castilla-la Mancha Wine

Castilla la Mancha is a region located in the central Iberian plateau that up until recently was mostly known for producing bulk wine. However, winemakers now produce more delicate releases. The main reds are made from Cencibel, the local name for Tempranillo, with blends from Cabernet Sauvignon, Monastrell, Garnacha, Syrah and Bobal.
But the area is best known for whites made from Airen. This grape used to be grown mainly for brandies. But nowadays, the varietal is produced as a still wine which is dry, light and refreshing.

  • Altozano Verdejo & Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Quire pure on the nose with hints of herb stem and earth framing sweet cognac tinged notes of earl grey tea and raspberry compote. The oak gains a little more intensity but aromatically this remains wonderfully focused and bright. On entry there a big rush of raspberry fruit followed by bristly yet well covered tannins and a nice dose of earthy... Read More

  • Opera Prima Pink Moscato NV

Nose: First scent I pick up is floral, violets, perhaps? Beneath that you can definitely smell some peach/fruit, but it's muted in comparison to the abundant smell of alcohol, which I feel is the most abundant flaw in an otherwise fine bottle.Taste: Very light, but no obvious astringencies that the pungent alcohol aroma would lead you to believe.... • Viento Aliseo Viognier 2012

This modest pick - an organic Viognier wine from La Mancha -stands tall and correct without a label depicting windmills; the sweet honeysuckle, peach and ginger nose is very Mediterranean and inviting; on the palate the pale straw liquid is smooth and balanced with just a hint of orange peel. Great value! 87 points. Read More
