for this region?

This region is in the northwest of Spain, in the Castilla y Leon province near Galicia. Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Cordillera Cantabrica mountain range ensures temperatures that are more moderate than other parts of the province. This means the Mencia grapes, thought to be a cousin of Cabernet Franc, ripen full and slowly, providing deep, smoky, luscious wines.
Garnacha is also grown for blends. White wines are produced from Godello, Dona Blanco and Palomino.

  • Losada Bierzo 2009

The cool climate red here is full of blueberry and cherry on the nose notwithstanding comparisons with Pinot Noir; on entry the mouth feel is soft, satin and well-balanced with medium tannin. Very elegant with a solid medium finish, this wine is a good bargain. 89 points. Read More

  • Casar de Valdaiga Bierzo 2009

Smokey and herbal on the nose and filled with tobacco, black tea, and dried autumnal aromas topping subtle black currant fruit. Showing some caramel notes on the palate, this is bordering on fully mature and perhaps is past peak for many palate, but its lively and shows excellent balance on a medium bodied frame. The fruit, slightly tart plum to... Read More

Wine review by Gregory Dal Piaz

  • I recently discovered Bierzo wines.. I love Priorat and Ribiera del Duero wines but they can be pricey for everyday drinking, and Bierzo is a nice alternative.
