Cariñena Wine

The Cariñena D.O. in the Aragon region was originally named for the grape of the same name, which used to dominate local plantings. However Garnacha has replaced much of those plantings more recently due to its popularity and response to the region’s growing conditions. This is one of the oldest appellations in Europe, having been awarded D.O. status in 1932. But this area has been in wine production for centuries, starting as most do, with the Romans. In 1585, King Phillip II visited the town of Cariñena and locals filled the fountain in the town square with wine instead of water as a grand gesture. To this day there is an annual September wine festival to commemorate this historic event, and the fountain runs wine for the occasion.

The vineyards are spread in the Campo (Plain) de Cariñena and nearby foothills. The continental climate is given to extremes of temperature, with hot summer days with low rainfall and much cooler evenings, thanks to the Read more »

  • Castillo de Monseran Garnacha Carinena 2015

    Snoothrank:

This is a wonderful value red that is red with purple hues upon the look and has great clarity! Fruit forward aromas of cherry, strawberry, and blackberry/blueberry warmth, along with black soil and some spice in the background. Flavors follow the aromas nicely and this is very juicy! The ripe berry character comes through very well and provi... Read More

  • Viñas Viejas de Paniza Garnacha 2012

    Snoothrank:

A lot of light comes through the garnet red color. Light, fruity nose. Light hit of red berries on introduction. Some stone fruit. I seems that there is an unusual texture here, that makes it seem like my tongue is covered with power on swallowing. Very unusual. Fairly light-bodied for a red. Light on tannin. Light on acid. From all my com... Read More
