Cariñena Wine


The Cariñena D.O. in the Aragon region was originally named for the grape of the same name, which used to dominate local plantings. However Garnacha has replaced much of those plantings more recently due to its popularity and response to the region’s growing conditions. This is one of the oldest appellations in Europe, having been awarded D.O. status in 1932. But this area has been in wine production for centuries, starting as most do, with the Romans. In 1585, King Phillip II visited the town of Cariñena and locals filled the fountain in the town square with wine instead of water as a grand gesture. To this day there is an annual September wine festival to commemorate this historic event, and the fountain runs wine for the occasion.
