for this region?

This region, located in the southwest of the Aragon near Zaragoza has evolved from being mainly a bulk wine-producing area to one with more of a distinguished association. The combination of hot and dry summers with high altitude vineyards ensures wines rich in character but without excessive alcohol content.

The majority of these big, bold wines are produced from Garnacha. The region is known for using fruit from older vines and the local wine authority, the Consejo Regulador, has set quality standards based on vine age. Those grown from vines 50 years old or older are given the classification “Calatayud Superior” and are highly sought-after, commanding top prices.

Rosados from Garnacha are also quite common. Other grapes grown in Calatayud are Tempranillo and Mazuelo. Some whites are produced from Viura (Macabeo), Malvasia and Chardonnay.

  • Las Rocas Garnacha 2009

    Snoothrank:

Poured the first glass and let it breath for thirty minutes. Loads of ripe red fruit on the nose and on the palate. Good balance of acidity and a touch of soft oak on the finish. This wine is a real bargain. Read More

  • Bodegas San Alejandro Garnacha Calatayud las Rocas 2009

    Snoothrank:

Christmas 2013, Binny's. First bottle from the cellar in 2015. Very good with a few spicy notes on the tongue. I know that means nothing to anybody, but suffice it to say it is worth your pocket change. Mary loved it, I had one sip and it was a quality one. She had it for two cocktail hours on 1/2 and 1/3/15. • Evodia Garnacha 2012

    Snoothrank:

The outward appearance of the bottle being a silvery blue attracted me to this wine. Very dark on the scale of the word red. It's aroma is one of a spicy nature. The initial taste explodes on the upper palate and stays there for some time. Blackberry, raspberry, earth and spice. The finish is long and the upper palate still savors it's deep rich... Read More

  • Evodia Garnacha 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very light, airy red with almost no tannic qualities. Sweet and fruity notes of blackberry and cherry. There is an initial hint of smokey oak that becomes stronger and more earthy in the aftertaste. This is not a wine for those who prefer a robust red. It would be well suited to a pre-dinner role paired with something like a salad, a plate of mi... Read More
