for this region?

This region, located in the southwest of the Aragon near Zaragoza has evolved from being mainly a bulk wine-producing area to one with more of a distinguished association. The combination of hot and dry summers with high altitude vineyards ensures wines rich in character but without excessive alcohol content.
The majority of these big, bold wines are produced from Garnacha. The region is known for using fruit from older vines and the local wine authority, the Consejo Regulador, has set quality standards based on vine age. Those grown from vines 50 years old or older are given the classification “Calatayud Superior” and are highly sought-after, commanding top prices.
Rosados from Garnacha are also quite common. Other grapes grown in Calatayud are Tempranillo and Mazuelo. Some whites are produced from Viura (Macabeo), Malvasia and Chardonnay.

  • Las Rocas Garnacha Do Calatayud 2010

Jammy strawberries with a little smoke and tar greet the nose along with hints of candy cane mintiness and some dried bay leaf. This is a fairly large scaled wine, though not super dense or chewy. the alcohol is noticeable in the mouth from front to back lending this a bit of a liquory profile in the mouth though the fruit is nicely red tinged a... • Altovinum Evodia Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Noticeably herbal and medicinal on the nose though in a candied, sweet register with plenty of underlying raspberry fruit. Theres a lot of licorice here as well as notes of dried bay leaf and cracked black pepper. So smooth in the mouth you barely notice it at times. this is really fascinating on the tongue, its a bit chewy with moderately rich,... Read More

  • Ateca Honoro Vera Garnacha 2011

Dark and mysterious on the nose with slow to emerge aromas of herb stem, plum, skin, mineral earth, and a hint of pencil eraser. Smooth and a bit matte in the mouth, this unfurls like a robe on your tongue, not heavy but opaque with rich blackberry fruit that shows suggestions of truffles and spice on the palate. the tannins and acid are both t... • Las Pizarras del Jalon Garnacha Vinas Viejas 2008

Reticent aromas of raspberry, tar, and old wood appear on the nose which gains subtle dried herb and candied black raspberry nuance with air. Moderately light bodied in the mouth this shows some very attractive bitter fruit flavors early in the moth. Still with fairly firm tannins, this feels nicely structured and firm in the mouth with a slight... Read More
