for this region?

This region, located in the southwest of the Aragon near Zaragoza has evolved from being mainly a bulk wine-producing area to one with more of a distinguished association. The combination of hot and dry summers with high altitude vineyards ensures wines rich in character but without excessive alcohol content.

The majority of these big, bold wines are produced from Garnacha. The region is known for using fruit from older vines and the local wine authority, the Consejo Regulador, has set quality standards based on vine age. Those grown from vines 50 years old or older are given the classification “Calatayud Superior” and are highly sought-after, commanding top prices.

Rosados from Garnacha are also quite common. Other grapes grown in Calatayud are Tempranillo and Mazuelo. Some whites are produced from Viura (Macabeo), Malvasia and Chardonnay.

  • Ateca Atteca Garnacha Calatayud Old Vines 2013

    Snoothrank:

Very pleasant on the palate with fruit and vanilla overtones with just a faint hint of sweetness. Finish has a slight citrus note than lingers pleasantly. I really like this wine. I paired it very successfully with grilled chicken and roasted vegetables and had another glass after dinner for my dessert. Read More

  • "As of 2010, Airén was estimated to be the world's 3rd most ... ... but the second was from Calatayud. Seems most all the plants there are grown up hillsides above 1700 feet. Later had plenty from Campo de Borja, too. Just for completeness' sake, here are some other names for garnacha/grenache I've run across:Abundante, Aleante, Aleantedi Riv... Read More

  • Las Rocas Garnacha Calatayud Do 2012

    Snoothrank:

Fairly direct aromas of cherry. In the mouth there's a bit more development of flavors integrating some earth and toast, on the mid palate alongside the dark red fruit. There's a welcome touch of spice on the finish, in the front of the mouth. Read More
