Jerez-xérès-sherry Wine

Jerez, or Xerez, is in southwest Spain in Andalucia (Andalusia), taking its name from the town of Jerez de la Frontera. “Sherry” is both the Anglican pronounciation of the region and the fortified wine it is known for. It occupies the “Golden Triangle” lying between the cities of Jerez, El Puerto and Sanlucar de Barrameda.

Jerez has three main soil types: Albariza is thin and chalky, best suited for growing the lighter styles of sherry from Palomino grapes. Baros is clay-dense and lightly chalky and Arenas is sandy, both more conducive to growing Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel for sweeter styles. The changes in climate also influence grape-growing. Areas that benefit from cooler ocean winds preserve vital acidity in the grapes and cellar temperature control.

Once the wine is fermented, it is monitored and designated for fortification, which is done by adding brandy (usually Destillado from La Mancha) to it, and further aging. The richness of the still wine and the amount of Read more »

  • Sandeman Royal Esmeralda Fine Dry Amontillado Sherry NV

    Snoothrank:

I have no idea how someone can call this great, fragrant wine 'musty'. Unless that someone does not like sherry, and in that case he should refrain from evaluating sherries. Just as people who don't like classical music should not rate classical cd's. The 'Royal Esmeralda' is a very nice Amontillado, with a huge fragrance and taste. Very nutty -... Read More

  • Hidalgo Oloroso Faraon Sherry NV

    Snoothrank:

Caramel and fresh kettle-corn on the nose, it's a campout in a bottle. Goes down smoothwith loads of butter-scotch and toasted almonds, yet retains a sharp acidity on the mid palate. Great with blue cheese and dried fruit. Read More

  • Lustau Light Fino Jarana Sherry NV

    Snoothrank:

Tawny-copper in color with aromas of orange peel, almond and raisons. Pecan and toffee flavors finishing dry with cocoa on the finish but a bit dried out and overly oxidized even for a Sherry. Seems like its best days are behind it but still interesting. Bottled May 17, 2007. Read More
