South East Australia Wine

South Eastern Australia is not so much a wine region or state, but a large zone that encompasses the Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania states. Wines that are labeled from South East can be made from anywhere within these states. As one can imagine, this is a massive stretch of land with diverse growing conditions and ranges in quality.

While this is a title given to what tend to be very inexpensive table wines, some of the top producers have been known to make a South Eastern blend because it allows them to access fruit from anywhere in these regions and create a “Frankenstein-like,” multiple-state blend of their own.

The reds are made most from Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cabernet. The whites from Chardonnay, Riesling, Vioginer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

A Naked Wines Selection. Deep dark purple red in the glass. • DM - as you know, it's originally from Spain in Aragon. It was the most widely planted red variety in the world just a few years ago and may still be. It was also the most planted red grape in Spain, which still has like twice as much as anywhere else in the world. Relatively speaking they have even more Monastrell, but that's a different story.... • DV - Triton Tridente is from Zamora, a little west of Toro. It's dry and hot, kind of like south CA. The wines from Toro are usually bigger and more rustic than those from Rioja - the idea is to tame the bull (Toro) and Zamora is like the kid brother of Toro. The Termanthia is one of the three or four best wines from Toro, but it's not like Rioj... Read More
