The Western Cape province in South Africa accounts for the majority of the wines produced in the country. The growing conditions and terroirs are varied in this vast region, making it conducive to many varietal possibilities and production styles. Due to considerable international influences, this is a place where Old and New World methods converge.

Pinotage is the national grape, and is cultivated along with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Chenin Blanc is the most popular white grape along with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. And as more international interest is taken in establishing vineyards, so to is the expansion of varietal possibilities.

The subregions of the Western Cape are:

*Breede River Valley (includes Robertson)
*Cape Agulhas
*Coastal Region (includes Stellenbosch and Paarl)
*Klein Karoo
*Olifants River
*Overberg
*Ruiterbosch
*Walker Bay

Western Cape on Snooth

  • Man Vintners Sauvignon Blanc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Not much going on on the nose, this is reticent though shows hints of a gently leafy green character. The mouth feel is quite attractive; lightly round but cut with fine, bright yet covered acidity, soft orchard fruit and sweet lime flavors. Its not complex but it is refreshing, and it finishes with more depth of flavor than the palate leads one... Read More

  • Partnership Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2010

    Snoothrank:

Bright and aromatic on the nose with gooseberry, cut grass and green plum aromas. Round yet bright on the palate, this delivers more green plum and green apple flavors with nice supporting acidity and a fairly rich mouth feel. The fruit really pops on the finish, showing an almost peachy character and a touch of sweetness that is balanced by rip... Read More

  • Zafrika Pinotage 2011

    Snoothrank:

This bottle reminds me of Africa. Smells of smoked meat with hints of cabbage (unusual for me!). Taste of cherry, raspberry with a pinch of pepper. Simple and has a good mouthfeel. Don't let is sit out for too long because it became vinegary after 2 hours! Very dry.http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/04/zafrika-pinotage-2011.htmlGreat value for ... Read More
