The Western Cape province in South Africa accounts for the majority of the wines produced in the country. The growing conditions and terroirs are varied in this vast region, making it conducive to many varietal possibilities and production styles. Due to considerable international influences, this is a place where Old and New World methods converge.
Pinotage is the national grape, and is cultivated along with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Chenin Blanc is the most popular white grape along with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. And as more international interest is taken in establishing vineyards, so to is the expansion of varietal possibilities.
The subregions of the Western Cape are:
*Breede River Valley (includes Robertson)
*Cape Agulhas
*Coastal Region (includes Stellenbosch and Paarl)
*Klein Karoo
*Olifants River
*Walker Bay

  • Jam Jar Shiraz Sweet Shiraz 2009

I agree with all of the reviews above - above average sweetness, very cute label, highly drinkable. My boyfriend found this a little too sweet, as he prefers a more dry wine. Read More

  • Jam Jar Shiraz Sweet Shiraz 2009

I tried the 2009 Jam Jar Shiraz at an in-store tasting. It's sweeter than a regular shiraz with its berry notes, but it's a nice little wine nonetheless. It goes well with eggs (especially quiche!), pork, and beef. The label suggests that it be served slightly chilled, but it goes down just fine at room temperature. I'd buy it again. Read More

  • Jam Jar Shiraz Sweet Shiraz 2009

Just polished off a bottle of this with the wife - what a fun wine. The name is perfect. The sweet is more of a honey sweet than a berry sweet. The sweet is not overpowering, but can be a bit unsettling the first few sips. It's kinda what I imagine Red Mead would taste like. Read More

  • Savanha Wines Pinotage Blend Pinotage-Shiraz 2007

This wine is straight-up delicious. Medium bodied and doesn't have the complexity of James Joyce but it delivers with flavors of smoked fish, leather, blueberries, red fruit and chocolate. Not to mention that the "delicious" and "drinkability" factors are high. Want to expand your palate? Never had Pinotage before? Start here. Read More

I found this wine nothing special and quite bitter...the aftertaste is not pleasant. I will probably use the rest of the bottle for cooking. Read More

  • Jam Jar Shiraz Sweet Shiraz 2009

Costco was featuring this wine last week so I decided to pick up a a couple bottles to have on hand for a cocktail party. Well, did this wine turn heads?!! I opened up a bottle to share over assorted meats and thought it was a perfect companion. The fruit makes a statement, but not too strong. A nice, lively wine. Read More
