The Western Cape province in South Africa accounts for the majority of the wines produced in the country. The growing conditions and terroirs are varied in this vast region, making it conducive to many varietal possibilities and production styles. Due to considerable international influences, this is a place where Old and New World methods converge.

Pinotage is the national grape, and is cultivated along with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Chenin Blanc is the most popular white grape along with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. And as more international interest is taken in establishing vineyards, so to is the expansion of varietal possibilities.

The subregions of the Western Cape are:

*Breede River Valley (includes Robertson)
*Cape Agulhas
*Coastal Region (includes Stellenbosch and Paarl)
*Klein Karoo
*Olifants River
*Overberg
*Ruiterbosch
*Walker Bay

  • Sebeka Sauvignon Blanc 2008

    Snoothrank:

It's totally acceptable, which is pretty good for this price range. Tart, dry, some citrus fruits - a more flavorful alternative to "a glass of the house pinot grigio, please." A weeknight summer quaff. Read More

  • Sebeka Sauvignon Blanc 2008

    Snoothrank:

It has a cheetah-spotted synthetic cork; I respect such whimsy. At 6-some-odd dollars, what were you hoping for? It's refreshing, with citrus fruit notes backed by some peppery action and a hint of seashore. I've spent $6 on it before, and by God, I'd do it again. Pack it for the beach. Read More

  • Sebeka Sauvignon Blanc 2008

    Snoothrank:

Moderately intense nose, waxy and of pineapples and grapefruit. Lightly sweet attack, but the palate is quite dry, laced with wooden flavors and some citrus fruit. Read More
