The Western Cape province in South Africa accounts for the majority of the wines produced in the country. The growing conditions and terroirs are varied in this vast region, making it conducive to many varietal possibilities and production styles. Due to considerable international influences, this is a place where Old and New World methods converge.
Pinotage is the national grape, and is cultivated along with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Chenin Blanc is the most popular white grape along with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. And as more international interest is taken in establishing vineyards, so to is the expansion of varietal possibilities.
The subregions of the Western Cape are:
*Breede River Valley (includes Robertson)
*Cape Agulhas
*Coastal Region (includes Stellenbosch and Paarl)
*Klein Karoo
*Olifants River
*Walker Bay

  • Jam Jar Shiraz Sweet Shiraz 2009

Knowing how much I love fruity wines, my husband picked up a bottle for me. It is most certainly a fun wine, with a very flavorful, smooth, berry taste. We went back to Total Wine to get another bottle. They didn't have it. So, we're now looking for it elsewhere. When we find it, we'll definitely get several bottles---loved it. Read More

  • Releaf Chenin Blanc 2009

Nose of mildly sweet fruit, peach and hints of stone. Strong acid bite on the attack which continued through the finish. Mid-palate had a strong steely taste with mild fruit (white grapefruit). Metallic finish. Balance favors the acid. Light to medium body. Dry. Read More

  • Sebeka Chenin Blanc 2008

This has some nice dust, chalk, and steely undertones on the nose that help to frame the ripe apricot, lemon curd and pollen tones of the fruit with an enticing red floral tone. Lovely balance on the palate, if a touch soft, but this is light and fresh and round all at the same time. The flavors are a touch simple with honey and raw peanut ton... Read More

  • Sebeka Pinotage Blend Shiraz Pinotage Blend 2008

Metallic, slightly rusty, yet still meaty and gamey barnyard aromas. Deep rich blackberry aromas, chocolate and cherries. Great acidity and balance, a hint of sweetness, and a long finish that's quite juicy. Read More
