The Western Cape province in South Africa accounts for the majority of the wines produced in the country. The growing conditions and terroirs are varied in this vast region, making it conducive to many varietal possibilities and production styles. Due to considerable international influences, this is a place where Old and New World methods converge.

Pinotage is the national grape, and is cultivated along with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Chenin Blanc is the most popular white grape along with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. And as more international interest is taken in establishing vineyards, so to is the expansion of varietal possibilities.

The subregions of the Western Cape are:

*Breede River Valley (includes Robertson)
*Cape Agulhas
*Coastal Region (includes Stellenbosch and Paarl)
*Klein Karoo
*Olifants River
*Overberg
*Ruiterbosch
*Walker Bay

Western Cape on Snooth

  • Bloem White Blend Western Cape 2016

    Snoothrank:

This has a floral, fleshy and peach driven nose with lemon citrus notes. On the palate this starts out zesty and citrusy with lemon and grapefruit giving way to a burst of green apple and pear fruit before becoming briny with notes of sea spray and a creamy finish. Nice complexity. Read More

  • Backsberg Chenin Blanc Western Cape

    Snoothrank:

Slate rock minerality and green apple on the steely nose. This has a touch of peach and green apple fruit but carries a bit of aged cheese and cream towards the finish that adds another dimension of complexity with a tingle of acidity towards the dry oaky finish. Read More

  • Arabella Reserve Chardonnay 2015

    Snoothrank:

Another recent Naked Wines selection. Clear Silver Gold in the glass. Opens with a lemon vanilla with a bit of underripe Cherry; then a buttery yeast, then more vanilla oak and lemon. Nice bit of acid with lemon and lemon grass, slate and mineral. As it sits still remains crisp, but loses some of the lemon and takes on more vanilla oak. Nicely b... Read More

  • Very underrated abd under sold. Some great volue wines coming out of this area. One just has to look for the smaller brands that are doing well.
