The Western Cape province in South Africa accounts for the majority of the wines produced in the country. The growing conditions and terroirs are varied in this vast region, making it conducive to many varietal possibilities and production styles. Due to considerable international influences, this is a place where Old and New World methods converge.

Pinotage is the national grape, and is cultivated along with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Chenin Blanc is the most popular white grape along with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. And as more international interest is taken in establishing vineyards, so to is the expansion of varietal possibilities.

The subregions of the Western Cape are:

*Breede River Valley (includes Robertson)
*Cape Agulhas
*Coastal Region (includes Stellenbosch and Paarl)
*Klein Karoo
*Olifants River
*Overberg
*Ruiterbosch
*Walker Bay

  • De Morgenzon Cabernet Sauvignon Rose Dmz 2013

    Snoothrank:

Very Cabernet driven on the nose with obvious notes of roasted chilies and red currant fruit. A hint of sweetness on entry is quickly balanced by plenty of juicy acidity here. A fairly big and slightly chewy rose, this delivers tons of slightly jammy strawberry and red currant fruit on the palate with a hint of herbaceousness adding complexity. ... Read More

  • Cape Indaba Chardonnay Western Cape 2012

    Snoothrank:

A bit melony on the nose but rather reticent overall width some apple and tangerine notes adding a touch of nuance. Bright on entry, this turns a bit plump in the mouth with a fair amount of volume but not a lot of depth of complexity. It does gain a nice subtle astringent note that help tot add both some textural interest as well as to offer a... Read More

  • Very underrated abd under sold. Some great volue wines coming out of this area. One just has to look for the smaller brands that are doing well.
