The Paarl wine region is located in the Coastal Region of South Africa’s Western Cape. The town of Paarl at the heart of the region is named for the shiny granite mountain in the distance, which early Dutch settlers called “den Diamont ende Peerlbergh” (“the diamond and pearl mountain”).

Paarl is situated in the Berg River valley, flanked by the Paarl mountains and Drakenstein Range. The climate is very similar to the Rhone in France, with a moderate warm summer cooled by Atlantic breezes toward fall and the harvest season, and a wet winter. There are three distinct soil types within Paarl: sandstone along the Berg river, free-draining granite on and toward the mountains and shale in the northeast corner.

The main varietals grown in Paarl are Shiraz, Mourvedre, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Semillon and Chardonnnay.

Paarl is further subdivided into the Franschhoek Valley and Wellington.  Read more »

    Snoothrank:

A white wine spritz from South Africa. Quite tasty, light fizz. Mild tropical flavor of Passion Fruit, and white grapes. I have also tried (and liked) their Pomegranite spritz. Goes well with spicey foods, and sharp cheese. Read More

  • Glen Carlou Red Bordeaux Blend Grand Classique 2009

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a lovely deep, inky purple color in the glass and the nose provides a combination of leather, blackberry, tart cherry, toasted oak and just a hint of baking spice. The taste is quite nice, with some tart cherry and plum up front that transitions to some lovely notes of tobacco and dark chocolate midpalate. The tannins are somewhat ... Read More
