The Paarl wine region is located in the Coastal Region of South Africa’s Western Cape. The town of Paarl at the heart of the region is named for the shiny granite mountain in the distance, which early Dutch settlers called “den Diamont ende Peerlbergh” (“the diamond and pearl mountain”).

Paarl is situated in the Berg River valley, flanked by the Paarl mountains and Drakenstein Range. The climate is very similar to the Rhone in France, with a moderate warm summer cooled by Atlantic breezes toward fall and the harvest season, and a wet winter. There are three distinct soil types within Paarl: sandstone along the Berg river, free-draining granite on and toward the mountains and shale in the northeast corner.

The main varietals grown in Paarl are Shiraz, Mourvedre, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Semillon and Chardonnnay.

Paarl is further subdivided into the Franschhoek Valley and Wellington.  Read more »

  • Boekenhoutskloof the Wolftrap White 2013

    Snoothrank:

2013 - Let's start off by recognizing that this is a $10 wine. We're not going into this expecting all that much. That said, this is a pleasant Rhône style wine, with a nice medium-dark red color. Lots of spice and earth, some mild red fruit. The alcohol hits hard, and is my one major sticking point with this wine. If that were a little better b... Read More

  • La Motte Pierneef Shiraz Viognier 2010

    Snoothrank:

Tight and focused on the nose with finely detailed notes of dried thyme, blackberry fruit, old wood and dried rosemary emerging from the glass. theres a bit of barnyard and a gamy edge here as well as a bit of excessive sulphur. Smooth and a bit tight with a lovely blip of acidity early on the palate followed by a polished, rich and very well ba... Read More

A white wine spritz from South Africa. Quite tasty, light fizz. Mild tropical flavor of Passion Fruit, and white grapes. I have also tried (and liked) their Pomegranite spritz. Goes well with spicey foods, and sharp cheese. Read More
