Constantia Wine

Constantia is just outside of Cape Town, in the lower slopes of Constantiaberg Mountain in South Africa’s Cape Point region. The Constantia estate, which produced the famous red dessert wine Vie de Constance, was established in 1685 by Cape Town’s first governor Simon van der Stel. The wine, made from Muscat Blanc and Red Muscat, had a special place in the hearts and cellars of many nobles and celebrities for the next couple of hundred years. But once the Phylloxera and oidium (powdery mildew) outbreaks took their toll, the winery was shut down for a long period. It was finally revived in the 1970s as Groot Constantia. Four other wineries make up this tiny region: Buitenverwachting, Klein Constantia (which, along with Groot Constantia make up the trifecta that was created when the original Constantia estate was diveded in the early 1700s), Constantia Uitsig and Steenberg.
