The Coastal Region, within the Western Cape district, is considered the heart of the South African wine industry. Though it covers a lot of land, most of the wineries surround the Northern Cape and Cape Peninsula. Toward the coast, both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans provide climatic influences to cool down the hot, arid daytime weather, ensuring a balance of alcohol, sugars and acidity in the grapes. Farther inland, the terrain is more elevated, and the weather is generally cooler, with varietals planted that are more suitable to cool-climate conditions. There are also variations in soil types from clay to limestone and varying degrees of moisture retention.

With this variance of climate and soil is a range of varietals that are grown. Pinotage and Chenin Blanc dominate the landscape, but others such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah (Shiraz), Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are also cultivated.

  • Cloof Pinotage Groenekloof 2003

    Snoothrank:

This wine has a purple-redish color. Got a bit of red fruit nose and spice with a short finish, though have a bit of grassy-bitter/chemical after-taste. It is not a very good wine in my opinion and is definitely not worth the price shown (USD $110.50). Read More

  • Seidelberg Wine Estate Red Bordeaux Blend Un Deux Trois 2004

    Snoothrank:

Wonderful vineyard and delicious wine. The price listed is too high. Even this vintage you can get for under $20 from US distributors (selectwinesllc). The vineyard uses French oak and has an old concrete fermentation bin. Perhaps, what imbues the rich chocolate and spice. Read More

  • Spice Route Shiraz Blend Swartland Malabar 2003

    Snoothrank:

The price quoted should be in South African Rand, not US dollars. I had the good fortune to visit the vineyard recently in South Africa and it cost 300 Rand. Beautiful setting and this wine came out of left field and knocked me out. Wonderful blend for those who like an exotic, spicy, full-bodied wine. Of all the wines I imbibed in SA, this ... Read More

Perfect, sweet dessert wine. Light gold in color. Sweet apricot nose, smooth body. Great, forever finish, hints of oak aging. All around an amazing wine - it's great to have South African friends who collect (and share) wine! Read More

  • Rudera Chenin Blanc 2005

Pale and lemon color, with a clean, medium intensity green fruit nose. The palate is slightly metallic, of apples with a medium body and a full medium to long finish. Read More

  • Rudera Chenin Blanc 2005

    Snoothrank:

This is an interesting wine, not very aromatic, gotta dig into it to find the richness. Might go well with the musky cheeses, or light pasta and shrimp. Read More
