The Coastal Region, within the Western Cape district, is considered the heart of the South African wine industry. Though it covers a lot of land, most of the wineries surround the Northern Cape and Cape Peninsula. Toward the coast, both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans provide climatic influences to cool down the hot, arid daytime weather, ensuring a balance of alcohol, sugars and acidity in the grapes. Farther inland, the terrain is more elevated, and the weather is generally cooler, with varietals planted that are more suitable to cool-climate conditions. There are also variations in soil types from clay to limestone and varying degrees of moisture retention.
With this variance of climate and soil is a range of varietals that are grown. Pinotage and Chenin Blanc dominate the landscape, but others such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah (Shiraz), Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are also cultivated.
The Coastal Region is divided into the following Read more »

  • Badenhorst Secateurs Red Blend 2011

Tight and focused on the nose with a smoky top note and lots of sour red fruits framed with hints of sweet green spices and perhaps a hint of banana and band aid on the nose. With a very attractive blend of lightness and richness on the palate, this delivers a lovely textured wine, supported by integrated acids and rounded soft tannins. the frui... Read More

  • Greetings to all from sunny Languedoc, thanks for taking the time to resond, I appreciate the welcome and the questions (although I cannot answer all of them, or necessarily provide as much detail as you might hope for, as I work full time as well as raising a family). • Buitenverwachting Beyond Sauvignon Blanc 2013

A bit simple but intense on the nose with a one-two punch of cut grass and gooseberries. Simple on the palate as well though crisp and juicy with lovely if delicate fruit that shows flashes of golden raspberries surrounding gooseberry and grapefruit pith flavors. Finishing with a nice bracing edge and good length this is a bit small scaled by ve... Read More

  • Barrels are not being replaced by stainless steel for economic reasons. I don't know who started that story but it's utterly false. Back in the 1970s when the US wine industry was first taking off, women were entering the workplace for the first time. They used to have all kinds of bars around that served a "businessman's lunch", because most pe... Read More

  • Ok, here's the site:, proffering 'French wines--a short guide'. Too many people tend to believe published material, even on the Int... Read More

  • Hi all!Hoping to wade into interesting wine talk (and food talk).  Me, I've been seriously enjoying and exploring wine for just over 20 years. On the red side, right now I'm partial to wines from Spain and the Rhone valley, but other loves are Oregon pinots, really good Italian wines (yes, it's endless, but that's the fun), and wanting to try mu... • Diemersdal Unwooded Chardonnay Chardonnay Durbanville 2012

My wife and I are not white wine drinkers. This came as part of a subscription to the South African Winemakers Guild along with a Merlot from the same winery. Overall this is a nice simple Chardonnay. It is unwooded so there is a smoother feel to this than other Chardonnays that I have had. Overall not a bad wine but not one that I would go seek...
