Breede River Valley Wine

The Breede River Valley is a low altitude, flat wine region in South Africa. Much of it has a hot and dry climate that is mostly too intense for cultivating grapes for still wine, but conducive to fortified wines made from Hanespoot (Muscat) and Muscadelle. However, there are areas which benefit from a more temperate climate, allowing the production of table wines.

Breede River Valley is divided into these subregions:

*Breedekloof: this district benefits from a more temperate climate and mountain slopes, with an array of soil types. Boutique and cooperative wineries produce everything from sparkling, table and dessert wines. Rich expressions of Pinotage and Shiraz are produced along with fruit-forward Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc.

*Robertson: also possesses growing conditions for quality table wines, where vineyards are situated at higher elevations.

*Swellendam: at the heart of the region, benefits from cooling effects Read more »

  • Graham Beck Shiraz 2008

    Snoothrank:

2008 Shiraz; 14,5%: nice red wine with a ruby-granat colour, aromas of flowers and red fruits with herbal notes.A good equilibrium of "warm" notes left by the tannins and acid-fresh, leaving a long lasting taste in mouth.Very good with dark chocolate. Read More

This is the most awesome red wine I've ever taste. It's smooth, a unique pleasant taste and smell, and at a resonable price. I've never been a wine drinker but decided to drink it because of hearing red wine was good for the heart and cholesterol. I am so thankful I've ran across this brand and it will be on my shelf for a long time. Thank you a... Read More

  • Robertson Winery Gewürztraminer Special Late Harvest 2007

    Snoothrank:

Love this wine with dessert! It is sweet, but not offensively so. The nice spice of the Gewurztraminer is nicely balanced. Even the wine snobs, (who honestly, don't know enough about wine to be so snobby), who come for Thanksgiving dinner swoon when I serve this wine. Affordable and nice for all of my guests. Read More

  • Danie de Wet Chardonnay Limestone Hill 2010

    Snoothrank:

Floral and spicy on the nose with a hint of rose water. Palate is full of blue cheese and green apple, with good acidity well balanced with the heat. Good long length. Very interesting wine! Read More
