Breede River Valley Wine

The Breede River Valley is a low altitude, flat wine region in South Africa. Much of it has a hot and dry climate that is mostly too intense for cultivating grapes for still wine, but conducive to fortified wines made from Hanespoot (Muscat) and Muscadelle. However, there are areas which benefit from a more temperate climate, allowing the production of table wines.
Breede River Valley is divided into these subregions:
*Breedekloof: this district benefits from a more temperate climate and mountain slopes, with an array of soil types. Boutique and cooperative wineries produce everything from sparkling, table and dessert wines. Rich expressions of Pinotage and Shiraz are produced along with fruit-forward Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc.
*Robertson: also possesses growing conditions for quality table wines, where vineyards are situated at higher elevations.
*Swellendam: at the heart of the region, benefits from cooling effects Read more »

  • De Wetshof "Limestone Hill Unoaked" Chardonnay Robertson 2015

Though I'm not a true "un-oaked" chard lover - I do like good wine and this is good wine. It comes straight at with green apples leading way, Orchard blossom, wet stone minerals and citrus fruit solidly back this up - if it had a longer this would be an 89/90. Drink now - it's worth it. • Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

A bit muted on the nose with subtle but attractive aromas of black fruits, violets, woodsmoke, and a hint of mint and rosemary. Big, round and polished in the mouth, this delivers ripe yet fresh black currant and plum fruit gentle framed with clean, fresh oak. The balance is attractive for a wine of this size, smooth yet firm enough though allow... Read More

  • Visit Rusticus Wine Cellar if you are ever on this most beautiful wine route. They are a very small producer still using antique equipment and their wines are most remarkable. They make an amazing blend called Tilled Earth, which is Cab, Merlot & Shiraz...highly recommended!!!
