Russian Wine

Wine has been produced in Russia since the time of the ancient Greeks, as it was with most of its Baltic neighbors such as Georgia, Slovenia, and Romania. Most of the northern sections of the country are just too dang cold and bleak to produce wine, but farther south conditions are much more favorable, near the Azov, Black, and Caspian Seas. It wasn’t until the 1800s that Russia began to produce wine commercially. The most famous venture was the sparkling wine out of Crimea by Prince Lev Sergeyevich Golitsyn at Novyi Svet winery, which won the gold medal at the 1889 Paris Expedition. With thesuccess of “The People’s Champagne,” Golitsyn continued to study French viticultural methods to plant vineyards with European varietals along the Black Sea coast. Novyi Svet still exists as one of Russia’s most famous commercial wineries.

But Russian wines had many things against them into the 20th century: Phylloxera, the exodus of French winemakers during Read more »

  • Fanagoria Cru Lermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

    Snoothrank:

Interesting wine with layered taste and complex aroma named by Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov. Locally grown grape, seedlings came from France, Jean Guy Arrive. Nose: red fruits, jasmine, light mint on top and small slice of caramel nearby. Medium body wine with perceptible minerality, not salty though. Taste starts with good acidity, wider red fru... • Sazyk Dere Merlot Marochnoye 2015

    Snoothrank:

"" /Marochnoye/ means "vintage wine", it also has shaped bottle, fancy label and the word "premium" in description... but all that is very misleading because it's not. well, the wine is not too bad - it has taste and some tannin at the end but I believe customers will expect something more than that... • Inozemec Nero d'Avola 2017

    Snoothrank:

For some reason Russian winemakers turn any grape into semi-sweet wine... I'm a big fan of this grape but I was shocked to see a bottle of semi-dry Nero d'Avola! Let's take a look at this unique bottle: first of all, "Inozemets" is a russian word for "foreigner", and It's called so because grape is not locally grown (that's honestly written in d... Read More

  • Russian Standard Vodka NV

    Snoothrank:

This is one of the most recognizable vodkas in Russia. We call it a "foam-rubber vodka" or "Paraffin vodka" because unlike to any other vodkas I'm aware of, it's easy to drink, has very light taste and soft alcohol effect. Regardless name, it's not a 'standard' taste of regular Russian vodka. This one is my favorite choice for long celebration t... Read More
