This peninsula region that up until 2009 was known as Terras do Sado and is now formally Peninsula de Setubal, is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the rivers Tejo and Sado. The Arrabida mountain range serves as protection against the effects of the Atlantic, with vineyards planted on the slopes of the mountains.
The area is divided into two DOC subregions:
Palmela: This is mostly a red wine-producing part of the region and wines are often found with the label “Vinho Regional de Terras do Sado.” Castelao (locally known as Perequita) is the main grape used. It is vinified as a single varietal as well as blended with Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Arragonez and international varietals such as Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. Whites grown are Muscat, Arinto and Fernao Pires as well as international varietals Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Rosado and sparkling styles are also produced.
Setubal: This DOC area is known for producing the region&rsquo Read more »

  • Periquita Reserva 2009

Imported by: Palm Bay Imports Fl40% Castelao, 32% Touriga Nacional, 28% Touriga Franca Pencil shavings and dried green herbs pop on the nose followed by astringent red fruits and rusty aromas. On entry this is almost sweet for a second, rich with ripe fruit but the vibrant acidity quickly washes that away and offers a great contrast to the ripe... Read More

  • Herdade da Comporta Chao Das Rolas Branco Peninsula de Setubal Portugal 2012

A blend of Arinto Vaz and Fernão-Pires And now for something completely different. This offers up aromas of quinine and medicine, with great big dried grass notes and sweetly oxidized aromas of fermenting apples and a touch of pine with a butchers wax topnote of volatility. In the mouth this tells a different story, fresh, edgy and bright with ... Read More

  • Jose Maria da Fonseca Periquita 2010

A blend of Castelão (74%), Trincadeira (14%), Aragonez (12%) A little smoky, earthy and vaguely mushroomy under briary almost black currant aromas with a little black spice on top. Lightweight on the palate but not without some tannin making for a lovely, easy drinking traditional table wine. Theres some nice raspberry fruit, a little spice, a... Read More

  • José Maria da Fonseca Setúbal Albis 2009

A blend of Touriga Nacional (59%) and Syrah (41%) Oaky on the nose and rather toasty with very earthy, clay like soil tones, hints of tobacco and a sweet almond top note. Rich and round on entry and a bit dense on the palate, this shows some sweetness behind the flavors of blackberries, dried thyme and chocolate. There are some dry tannins on t... Read More

  • Periquita Reserva 2010

A blend of Castelão (38%), Touriga Nacional (34%), Touriga Francesa (28%) Smells a bit like Syrah, peppery, inky a bit olivy, and filled with briary blue and black fruit, spice notes and a late hint of vanilla. Pretty rich on entry with an attractive stemmy accent to the rich core of blueberry and raspberry fruit. Medium light body with supple i... Read More

  • Periquita Reserva 2010

This wine contains less than 40% Castelão (Periquita) so is hardly Periquita per se. However, the inclusion of Touriga Nacional is definitely a plus; the nose has a hint of sour cherry - even cranberry - with wet earth. The entry is tart, with more cranberry and some soft tannin. The wine finishes short to medium with sweet and sour notes lin... Read More

Very good Portugese red, with dried herbs and nice savory fruit. Killer with pulled pork (if you pass on the sweet BBQ sauce), and a very good price/performance wine. Read More
