This peninsula region that up until 2009 was known as Terras do Sado and is now formally Peninsula de Setubal, is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the rivers Tejo and Sado. The Arrabida mountain range serves as protection against the effects of the Atlantic, with vineyards planted on the slopes of the mountains. 
 
The area is divided into two DOC subregions:
 
Palmela: This is mostly a red wine-producing part of the region and wines are often found with the label “Vinho Regional de Terras do Sado.” Castelao (locally known as Perequita) is the main grape used. It is vinified as a single varietal as well as blended with Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Arragonez and international varietals such as Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. Whites grown are Muscat, Arinto and Fernao Pires as well as international varietals Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Rosado and sparkling styles are also produced.
