Porto Wine

Porto (or Oporto, or Port) is Portugal’s second largest city, located at the mouth of the Douro, the gateway to wine country. It is the center of Portuguese shipbuilding and trade, with a history that dates back to the Roman occupation, through the Moorish settlement of the area, and into a strong relationship with England, beginning in the 14th century and the marriage of John I of Portugal to Philippa of Lancaster (daughter of John of Gaunt).

The English fascination with Portuguese wine began in the 14th century when their relationship with France became shaky and they had far less access to quality French wines. Their new friends, the Portuguese, had an abundance of wine in the Douro, but the English found it to be much more crude compared to what they were used to. So they began to add brandy to the wine to preserve it for shipment back to England, and thus, in a sense, the first Ports were born. But it wasn’t until the 17th or 18th century that this process became more refined Read more »

Porto on Snooth

  • Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2004

    Snoothrank:

This wine pours a deep ruby color with rusty tinges around the rim....it has nice clarity and excellent legs! The aromas are of deep blackberry, cherry, hints of licorice and leather belt, and the finish has an ounce of booziness and it does linger....fresh! The flavors are more subtle and simple with fresh boysenberry, dark cherry, blackberry... Read More

  • Domaine Torraccia Rose Porto Vecchio Corsica 2016

    Snoothrank:

A touch of toast greets the nose with fresh light cherries and strawberries adding freshness. Juicy peach, strawberry and cherry on the palate, full and firm with good acidity, definitely a bit punchy towards the finish with zesty spice and wet slate minerality adding depth and dimension to this easy, breezy selection. • Quinta Do Portal Port Blend Porto Vintage 2003

    Snoothrank:

Opened Dec 2017.....this could age for another 20 years or better!Pours slightly viscous but it isn't oily or syrupy.....and it definitely needs a decanting due to lots of residual sugars/stems/skin that has settled. Semi hazy ruby color with rustic overtones starting to appear. Smell is of licorice and assorted roots, heavy plum/raisined frui... Read More

I bought this bottle of port from the website ... its name from the City of Oporto at the mouth of that river. It is a fortified wine because brandy is added to arrest the fermentation process. My bottle was made at Quinta do Silval,a small family concern in this area who use the Magalhaes name of the owner on some of their cuvees of port My bot... Read More

  • Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2007

    Snoothrank:

Huge and plentiful legs accompany this beautifully colored, aged LBV. Colors are beginning to show tawny hues, still with a body cranberry, black cherry syrup, and black plum juice....opaque as it should be....starting to show some muddled character. Aromas of huge raisined grape, beginnings of licorice root, rounded and delicate alcohol, blac... Read More
