Porto Wine

Porto (or Oporto, or Port) is Portugal’s second largest city, located at the mouth of the Douro, the gateway to wine country. It is the center of Portuguese shipbuilding and trade, with a history that dates back to the Roman occupation, through the Moorish settlement of the area, and into a strong relationship with England, beginning in the 14th century and the marriage of John I of Portugal to Philippa of Lancaster (daughter of John of Gaunt).

The English fascination with Portuguese wine began in the 14th century when their relationship with France became shaky and they had far less access to quality French wines. Their new friends, the Portuguese, had an abundance of wine in the Douro, but the English found it to be much more crude compared to what they were used to. So they began to add brandy to the wine to preserve it for shipment back to England, and thus, in a sense, the first Ports were born. But it wasn’t until the 17th or 18th century that this process became more refined Read more »

Nice, smooth, easy drinking port. Ripe plums, raisins, a hint of anise, low to medium tannins and a medium finish. This held up well over the course of two weeks. Read More

  • I started a bottle of Port last night. It was a Real Companhia Velha Vinho do Porto Don Jose Tinto Aloirado NV. I suspect that this is a fairly old bottle although there was no vintage year on it. It was an opaque brown in colour and very sweet with a raisin and almond style fruit but what I really noticed was the alchol. It was 19% ABV. I have ... Read More

  • Fonseca Porto 10 Year Old Tawny 2013

    Snoothrank:

Had this at Trombino's along side the Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Old Tawny...Both are amazingly good, Fonseca is both in appearance and taste more of a 'Ruby' than the Taylor Fladgate. That is not to say it is, just that Taylor Fladgate has more of the typical tastes of a Tawny, raisin fruit, wood...whereas the Fonseca tastes to me more of the Ruby ... Read More

  • Taylor Fladgate First Estate Port NV

    Snoothrank:

For a NV Ruby, or any Ruby, this one is a beauty and good Lord, how inexpensive. Very intense and concentrated, lovely thick burgundy color, bits of chocolate, fudge, liquorice, and anise. A deep jammy Plum taste. Still seems very young and will be very interesting to see how and if this ages well. Read More
