Porto Wine

Porto (or Oporto, or Port) is Portugal’s second largest city, located at the mouth of the Douro, the gateway to wine country. It is the center of Portuguese shipbuilding and trade, with a history that dates back to the Roman occupation, through the Moorish settlement of the area, and into a strong relationship with England, beginning in the 14th century and the marriage of John I of Portugal to Philippa of Lancaster (daughter of John of Gaunt).

The English fascination with Portuguese wine began in the 14th century when their relationship with France became shaky and they had far less access to quality French wines. Their new friends, the Portuguese, had an abundance of wine in the Douro, but the English found it to be much more crude compared to what they were used to. So they began to add brandy to the wine to preserve it for shipment back to England, and thus, in a sense, the first Ports were born. But it wasn’t until the 17th or 18th century that this process became more refined Read more »

Porto on Snooth

  • Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2007

    Snoothrank:

Huge and plentiful legs accompany this beautifully colored, aged LBV. Colors are beginning to show tawny hues, still with a body cranberry, black cherry syrup, and black plum juice....opaque as it should be....starting to show some muddled character. Aromas of huge raisined grape, beginnings of licorice root, rounded and delicate alcohol, blac... Read More

  • Yes it is, but some of these will be gifts for my porto pals and I'll probably keep 6 or so for over the years.  I've bought porto in this quantity in the past for that reason when the QPR is there - it's there.  When I buy the vintage bottlings I buy in smaller quantities, but given the bills from the radiation therapy this is a good buy for th... • Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2011

    Snoothrank:

Typically beautiful coloration of blackberry/black cherry, opaque black/brown goodness with amazing legs! The aromas are still a little young with booze showing immediately, but sugarplum, prune, fig, deep dark berries etc....flavors are nice with sugary plum, quite a bit of alcohol, boysenberry/chokecherry and cherry as well as cranberry/green... • Ramos Pinto Late Bottled Vintage Portwein 2008

    Snoothrank:

Intense ruby coloration and with striking legs, this has loads of juicy Welch's grape juice and plum/raisin fruits on the aromas....slightly boozy upon opening but this mellows out shortly thereafter. The flavors follow suit and along with all of the aforementioned characteristics, there is a very nice licorice root/Earthy quality about it....n... Read More
