Porto Wine

Porto (or Oporto, or Port) is Portugal’s second largest city, located at the mouth of the Douro, the gateway to wine country. It is the center of Portuguese shipbuilding and trade, with a history that dates back to the Roman occupation, through the Moorish settlement of the area, and into a strong relationship with England, beginning in the 14th century and the marriage of John I of Portugal to Philippa of Lancaster (daughter of John of Gaunt).

The English fascination with Portuguese wine began in the 14th century when their relationship with France became shaky and they had far less access to quality French wines. Their new friends, the Portuguese, had an abundance of wine in the Douro, but the English found it to be much more crude compared to what they were used to. So they began to add brandy to the wine to preserve it for shipment back to England, and thus, in a sense, the first Ports were born. But it wasn’t until the 17th or 18th century that this process became more refined Read more »

  • Fonseca Bin 27 Porto NV

    Snoothrank:

This wine caught me completely off guard. Having never had a Port before, I'm thinking I picked a good one. The nose is amazing with beautiful complexity. It's a bit heavy on alcohol on the nose but it never comes through on the taste. Certainly decanter or aerate this baby. The taste will knock you back if you're not ready. Cherry, cedar,... • Sandeman Port Tawny Porto NV

    Snoothrank:

A fairly sugary port with a little sourness, a hint of nuts, and a good amount of cherry soda in the flavor. Not a great port, but drinkable and superior to cheap wine. Read More

  • Quarles Harris Porto Lbv 2007

    Snoothrank:

This vintage in Portugal has a good reputation and this wine reflects that. At first taste, this 2007 appears to be very similar to their 2006. It is inky dark, very sweet, rich with spice and tar notes. It does not degrade with air as the 2006 will. It will age very well. It has a bit more tannin than the 2006. Really delicious fruit in both wi... Read More
