Porto Wine

Porto (or Oporto, or Port) is Portugal’s second largest city, located at the mouth of the Douro, the gateway to wine country. It is the center of Portuguese shipbuilding and trade, with a history that dates back to the Roman occupation, through the Moorish settlement of the area, and into a strong relationship with England, beginning in the 14th century and the marriage of John I of Portugal to Philippa of Lancaster (daughter of John of Gaunt).

The English fascination with Portuguese wine began in the 14th century when their relationship with France became shaky and they had far less access to quality French wines. Their new friends, the Portuguese, had an abundance of wine in the Douro, but the English found it to be much more crude compared to what they were used to. So they began to add brandy to the wine to preserve it for shipment back to England, and thus, in a sense, the first Ports were born. • Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2011

    Snoothrank:

Typically beautiful coloration of blackberry/black cherry, opaque black/brown goodness with amazing legs! The aromas are still a little young with booze showing immediately, but sugarplum, prune, fig, deep dark berries etc....flavors are nice with sugary plum, quite a bit of alcohol, boysenberry/chokecherry and cherry as well as cranberry/green... Intense ruby coloration and with striking legs, this has loads of juicy Welch's grape juice and plum/raisin fruits on the aromas....slightly boozy upon opening but this mellows out shortly thereafter. The flavors follow suit and along with all of the aforementioned characteristics, there is a very nice licorice root/Earthy quality about it....n... Read More

  • My red would be the '03 Quinta Noval LBV Porto.  Stunning wines with years left in the tank.  Rich dark fruit, cocao, earthiness, ballsy yet elegant. The perfect foil to double dark chocolate/dark cherry fudge brownies and real French vanilla ice cream on the side both drizzled with juice. Drool.I'm gonna think awhile before I name a white - har... Read More
