Porto Wine

Porto (or Oporto, or Port) is Portugal’s second largest city, located at the mouth of the Douro, the gateway to wine country. It is the center of Portuguese shipbuilding and trade, with a history that dates back to the Roman occupation, through the Moorish settlement of the area, and into a strong relationship with England, beginning in the 14th century and the marriage of John I of Portugal to Philippa of Lancaster (daughter of John of Gaunt).

The English fascination with Portuguese wine began in the 14th century when their relationship with France became shaky and they had far less access to quality French wines. Their new friends, the Portuguese, had an abundance of wine in the Douro, but the English found it to be much more crude compared to what they were used to. So they began to add brandy to the wine to preserve it for shipment back to England, and thus, in a sense, the first Ports were born. But it wasn’t until the 17th or 18th century that this process became more refined Read more »

  • Graham's Late Bottled Vintage 2008

    Snoothrank:

The coloration would be a murky rusty brown Earth with a tawny ring around the rim. The aromas are of spicy alcohol upfront before any swirling, with black cherry and concord sweetness. Flavors are pretty close to the aromas with sweet cherry, spiced vanilla, subtle dry oak making up the bulk along with dark chocolate and deep plummy fruits on... Read More

  • Warre's Port Tawny Otima 20 Year 2010

    Snoothrank:

I was given this bottle of wine and have no idea where my benefactor got it ... its name from the City of Oporto at the mouth of that river. It is a fortified wine as brandy is added to arrest the fermentation process.Tawny port is a style of port where there is a long aging in oak barrels resulting in oxidation and a colour more amber than red... • Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2004

    Snoothrank:

This wine pours a deep ruby color with rusty tinges around the rim....it has nice clarity and excellent legs! The aromas are of deep blackberry, cherry, hints of licorice and leather belt, and the finish has an ounce of booziness and it does linger....fresh! The flavors are more subtle and simple with fresh boysenberry, dark cherry, blackberry... Read More

  • Domaine Torraccia Rose Porto Vecchio Corsica 2016

    Snoothrank:

A touch of toast greets the nose with fresh light cherries and strawberries adding freshness. Juicy peach, strawberry and cherry on the palate, full and firm with good acidity, definitely a bit punchy towards the finish with zesty spice and wet slate minerality adding depth and dimension to this easy, breezy selection.
