Douro Wine

This region, named for the river, is best known for its reds that are specially selected to go into Port. However, excellent still wines have also emerged from this region. It runs from the Spanish-Portugal border up along the Douro to the town of Porto. Production dates back to Roman times, when monks planted vines on the steep slopes.

The turning point in its history came in 1703 with the Treaty of Methuen (Methwen) when England and Portugal worked out a discounted exchange rate for wine to England and textiles to Portugal. English wine importers then began to classify Port and the area was divided into three sections:

*Baixo Corgo, the coolest and wettest, with the fewest grapes grown specifically for Port.
*Cima Corgo, the higher region surrounding the town of Pinhao. This is the heart and soul of the Douro and the main Port quintas are situated here. This is where most of the higher quality tawny, late bottle vintage and vintage Ports are produced.

  • Giroflé Branco Douro 2014

    Snoothrank:

Really nice, food friendly Portugese white made up of viosinho, rabigato and malvasia. Lemon cream on the nose. Kind of creamy but not overly oaked or buttery. Decent amount of acidity, lemon cream, a touch of ripe pear, subtle herbal notes on the back end, and a medium finish. This went well with panko crusted snapper and roasted brussel sprouts. • Porca de Murca Douro 2013

    Snoothrank:

Purpleish coloring with burgundy/red hues....looks just like fresh grape juice and has wee tiny bubbles upon pouring! Aromas of cassis, Earthy berries, soil and pith...dry overall. As this warms up, the flavors are dry, fruity, tobacco leaf, cherry, root spices and perhaps some dry premium cocoa. Creamy smooth mouthfeel and highly drinkable, ... Read More

  • I am drinking a 2013 Porca de Murca, Douro Reserva from Portugal. The wine seems to be fine, clear sight, clean fruity nose, in the beginning its fine on the palate (maybe a lack of fruit compared to the nose)... everything but the finish. It has a weird bitter finish, very unpleasant. Its not the tart taste of tannins (even so it is pretty high... Read More
