Beiras is a Portuguese wine region covering the same areas as its namesake region. The region is classified as a Vinho Regional (VR), a designation similar to a French vin de pays region. Wines outside these demarcated areas are labeled VR Beiras. In general, the climate in Beiras is Continental, hot and dry in the summer with long, cold winters. The landscape varies greatly, stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Spanish border. For example, DOC Dão is recognized as the granite heart of Portugal with the dramatic peaks of the Serra da Estrela. DOC Bairrada, in contrast, includes the Read more »

  • Luis Pato Colheita Seleccionada 2011

    Snoothrank:

70% Baga, 30% Touriga Nacional Deep, leathery and subtly spicy with notes of white pepper and cardamom on the nose, this gains layers of complexity with air running the gamut from pressed flowers to vegemite, peppercorn to sweet pipe tobacco. A bit firm in the mouth, though without the explosive acids Baga sometimes have. Still this is bright a... Read More

  • Filipa Pato Nossa Calcario 2012

    Snoothrank:

Lots of oak influence on the assertive smoky, bacon fat, pork fat nose. This shows some sweetness on entry balancing the fairly prominent acidity all supporting lots of yellow apple fruit with an edge of marzipan adding sweetness. This turns clean, precise and bracing on the long, tart, mineral laced backend that shows fine depth and a sweet min... Read More

  • Luis Pato Quinta Do Moinho Red Blend 1999

    Snoothrank:

dusty, slightly spicy nose and a dense, earthy palate with a spicy, strong oak imprint. Pairs nicely with gamey meats now but if you are planning on saving this for 10 or more years, it is suggested to pair excellently with a good sheep cured cheese. Read More
